have jenners, hunchies, blackjacks, jags, and victors - only the hunchies use standards since the hump ALWAYS gets smoked fast (which is why i never pilot it anymore either). for the rest, speed + firepower = life so they all get XLs to go 80+kph and i make sure i keep moving and swerving so nobody can get a bead on any particular torso

my 4G is the only HBK i run a lot anymore. For some reason that little guy and I just click. Lose my hunch lessthan 1/3 of the time. On my 4P, always lose it because the lasers require DoT, and the H ..... probably the same, since to use those extra energy hardpoints, you have to stare. On my 4G, I can shoot, snap out of line and just go.

Trebuchets run XLs well, they have the hitboxes of a victor if you ask me, almost the same size aswell lol. but at 140KPH the 3C becomes quite difficult to hit especially from the side.

XLs in all of my mechs, but my assaults are the Heavy Metal and the Battlemasters from Phoenix. No Atlai.

i just have my 4P left - sold my others 9 months ago when i wanted cash to start buying jenners. would love to buy them back but my BJs are just better all around so i'm not so inclined at the moment. i used XLs on them when ERPPCs had lower heat and i could hang back, but those glory days are long gone haha

I use xl on all my mechs, but then I have max armor too. Most if my rides tank damage ok. For an Assault being their much bigger speed is life!. Your better off with an XL engine than not. There is just more pros than cons IMHO.

Lights - XL
Mediums - XL
Heavy - XL/STD
Assault - STD/XL
I mostly run XL in my mechs but I do have some deadly builds that can tank with STD engines too. If you run an XL in an Atlas (Boar's Head
) you better not have any ballistic equipped, its just like the hunch on a hunchback, easy to hit.
Otherwise Highlanders/Victors/Battlemasters can all deal with XL engines well. I have a couple of them with STD too.

blackjacks are fine with xl since you always have to face your target to fire anyway since the arms aren't mobile, they'll be blasting your CT more often than not whether you have a std or an xl in it.

catapults pretty much need XL engines to perform at 100%, their sides are far to small and awkward to aim at to just not have one Thunderbolts should really use standards as theyre still able to do quite a bit with only half a mech left and have pretty big torsos and arms to increase durability further and orions are sort of either way works well
if your in a light you need an XL. there is no ifs or buts about it you need that speed/weight
mediums are variable, hunchbacks generally dont use XL Centurion often dont so they can zombie kintaros an griffins are likely to XL...
assaults: youve already got a crap load of spare weight, having an XL cripples the main point in so much armour by allowing people to just target a much sofer side torso which is often the case when fighting an assault mech.
