It was a bit painful at the end. My wife was giving me score marks I had to beat after every matches. It got ridiculous.

"You need to get at least 4 kills, touch 8 people (that's everyone else), and get about 700-800 damage, stay alive, and win."

That sentence is going to echo in my head when I sleep.

Classic!

I got by largely on account of making the top 20, she didn't seem too impressed until she found out I was actually doing quite well ;)

My best matches occurred while I was casually talking to my girlfriend about the various ***** and ****** with whom she used to go to school. The subtle, low-level distraction kept me from getting too amped up and allowed me to play instinctively. Got 4 220+ matches in a row thanks to her.

The second she left the room to do an exercise video, I started playing like shit.

Lesson learned, my woman is a good luck charm.

Lol that's how it goes. There comes a point when you need 6 kills, 500+ damage, survival and victory to knock your overall up like <50 points.

Like others have been saying, at some point you figure the odds of you doing 99.9% of your best in the next hour or two are low enough to quit and open a beer.

I think you underestimate the damage, assists, and kills that an arty + air combo accumulate every match. I'd estimate that arty + air benefited the tournament leaderboard by an average of 250 points (1 arty + 1 air = 1 assists + 0.25 kills + 150 dmg * 10 matches).

I was #31 on Griffins without the use of arty/air, with a score of 1,946. I was about 200-250 away from making the leader board. Probably could have done it if I wasn't so forgetful.

Can you believe I was dropping with an empty 3rd module slot for 90% of the tourney?

Modules schmodules. Not a single one on my Blackjack. I tried Cool Shot once for fun, and never again.

Real men don't need modules. Heck, they don't even need *armor!* See?

Sometimes I wish UI would nag you when you try to launch with an empty slot.

My Griffin wasn't even fully elited when I started. I didn't unlock the 3rd module slot till late Saturday.

I have not used arti/air at all, nor any other consumables, in this new UI it is just too painful to reequip them each time. Adv.sensor+Info gathering+Seismic sensor = sniper choice.

I could have played tons of games. Wouldn't help.

If someone can make me a better medium pilot, that would help.

I can't believe I didn't think of arty+air for higher score during the tournament, I've never used that stuff. I'm a rookie tho so no surprise there. I got up to 26th then beat back down to 38th, fought my way back up to 34th, all on my Jenner. Not bad I figure for a new guy. Was a lot of fun trying to out preform your own low scoring rounds. Hope to see more tournament type stuff. Gratz winners.

Edmiester was using a Jenner every time I saw him, don't know about the others, but probably Jenners or Firestarters since ECM does not make up for the problems the Spider and Raven face when fighting other Lights with more hardpoints and jump jets.

Shin was on an Firestarter-E 4xMG 4xMLas
Ed was on a Jenner-F 6xMLas
Lord Azurescens was on a Raven-3L 2x ER Large
Coburn was on a Jenner-F 6xMLas
badkilik was on a Raven-3L 2x ER Large if I remember right.
H0rste33 was also ona Raven-3L with 2xER Large according to someone else

Ed had a Miracle game in the last 20 minutes of the tournament with 1.2k DMG 7Kills and 4 Assists thats what catapulted him from 2541 to 2588.

Didn't see/pay enough attention to the others though.

The only one that I really sweat in the 5d is the oxide.

It'd be nice to see a full breakdown of entrants in each class and what model and variant each used. Seems none of the top guys ran spiders and I'd love to know where I placed in that chassis (58th overall)

Course, as soon as the contest is over I do this:

I hear a lot of complaints about arty. Mostly from people who want to camp out on a hill and snipe without having to be bothered with moving, or by sync drop assault lances that camp in a cluster, dealing death with their meta cheese builds, or sometimes by lights, camped behind a base, waiting for the ticker to change color.

Notice the pattern here...dont like arty? Don't camp.

Remember how campy games were before arty? Now people remind each other not to camp too close to one another, because it invites arty strikes.

At best, an arty strike is going to add 10-15 points to your match score, 100-150 points to your tourney score. And you really want to begrudge someone 10-15 points that they earned by making a camper move his arse?

lol ... mere 15 points. Thats 15 points PER GAME, 150 points added to a total score. More that enough to make all the difference between 1st place and 10th place in most classes.

And if you use both arty and airstrike its more likely to be 250-300 points. I doubt there is more than 5% (if any at all) among all top 10 tourney standings who did NOT use both arty/air for each of their top 10 games.

I find it funny when people claim arty is only dropped into large groups of 'campers'. If you are in an assault mech like HGL or ATL you move at 64 kph tops, there is no way to avoid a properly dropped artillery strike due to lack of speed and manouverability EVEN if you move all the time.

Or, when you fight on smth like River City, you mostly fight around that big building in the middle. You can say that teams 'camp' behind it while in reality there is no way to not 'camp'. You go left into open space you get shot by other team, you go right into open space you get shot by other team just the same. I'm not sure how it is in your matches, but in mine, if you stay outside cover for longer than 5 seconds you are dead. So yes, teams tend to 'camp' a lot, but not only 'sniper' builds, but 'brawler' builds as well.

Besides, I've seen arty/air been used on SINGLE assault mechs all the time, even on single scouts in conquest mode, when somebody just drops arty on a certain resource point based on cap meter from like 1000m away from it not even knowing what is capturing it.

Artillery strikes are a needed part of the game, BUT it has to be what it is supposed to be. It is NOT supposed to be a way to boost your damage by 400 points, and it is NOT supposed to be used non-stop every 30 seconds. I've had matches where my team had 10-12 arty/air dropped on it during the match. Tell me, is it MechWarrior Online or Artillery simulator?

Some people find matches within 10 seconds when dropping solo, some wait for 10 mins to get into one. No.

Ed was on 6xMLs Jenner on the earlier part of the tourny but on the later stage, I believe he was running LL + 3MLs.
badkilik... I am not sure if he was switch around his primary build is actually the Spider 5K with 4MGs + MPls or Ember.
