You should buy the "BattleTech: Introductory Box Set" which you can get here:
http://www.amazon.co...x/dp/193687685X
There are two Introductory Box Set an old and a new one. Make sure to get the new one since the quality(especially of the plastic miniatures) is way better.
It is really worth it's money; you'll get:
• 24 unpainted, ready-to-play plastic BattleMech minis
• 2 unpainted, premium-quality plastic BattleMech minis
• One 12-page full-color quick-start rulebook will have players into the action in minutes
• 36-page book of pre-generated BattleMech Record Sheets
• One 80-page full-color rulebook
• Inner Sphere at a Glance, a 56-page full-color book of universe background and BattleMech technical data
• One 16-page full-color Painting and Tactics Guide
• Two heavy-duty cards of compiled tables
• Two 18" x 24" game-board quality maps.
• Two six-sided dice
• One full-color, poster-sized map of the Inner Sphere circa 3067
If you already want to get familiar with the lore and the rules here are two free PDFs:

The boxed set is GREAT. Get the new one. Its a complete game. Nothing more needed. Ever. But you will WANT to get more for sure. Brilliant.
