Ok, I've read over most everything I can find. Long time BT fan, books, pen/paper, games so I decided to try this out.

From what I can see it looks like every mech requires some degree of MC (real cash) and Com-Bills. I've been racking up the CB playing matches with the trainer mechs and just got the Centurion over the weekend with 5 match wins.

Next step in my mind, to make it the game more enjoyable, is to get a mech to call my own.

At this point do I have to invest money to get MC's or is there a way (like with my Centurion) to get them without having to spend real monies.

Not sure I want to sink a lot of cash until I see how I like this long-term.

Thanks!

The prices listed in the mech shop are either/or - you can buy the mechs with MC, or with C-bills. It doesn't need both.

Only Heroes and Champons require cash. You may need to scroll down past them or use the weight class button on the left to narrow your list to start viewing regular mech variants Don't be led astray by the price for regular mech variants, they're available for both or .

Be sure to look over the mech stats carefully and don't be afraid to ask questions. Better to take your time to find the mech you want than to make an expensive mistake.

Could it be that you just didn't see the select button at the mechlab where you can choose "purchasable mechs"

I too didn't know how to buy a mech when they introduced the new UI

What they both said...When you change your filter at the top of your Mechlab to show purchasable mechs, scroll down past all the mechs with the H or C after their names and when you click on a mech you want it will ask you if you want to spend C-bills or MC...click on C-Bills and you have a mech for nothing but game money...easy as 123-6...lol

Only thing you'd absolutely need MC for is if you decide you want more than 4 mechs at a time (5 if you get the free mech bay with the CN9-A promotion that ends tomorrow). I think its less than $2 per additional bay.

MC then is also used to more quickly get mechs or more quickly earn CBills and XP, and camo/color options.

The word "and" can be confusing. For example, if you go to the grocery store you can buy food with money or foodstamps. But if you can buy food with money and foodstamps, well better be prepared to have both handy to pay both prices. At least, that's how it looks on surface value.

That said, welcome to mechwarrior online. As a tabletop fan you'll be quite happy. Art fan, you'll fall in love. Lore fan, and you may bash your head against a wall. Repeatedly. But overlook that and you're in for a good experience.

Some quick advice. You know how lore says autocannons fire in burst? Well they just took the tabletop rules there and they are powerful. Obscenely so and pinpoint. ACs are the go-to weapons and will help you get on your feet quick.

I advise looking over mechs and the playstyle you enjoy and asking questions when you're ready to get your first mech.

Since the armor equality rule of tabletop is here, all mechs of the same weight can have the same max armor. Expect Jagermechs to be brawlers, not fire support, and be wary of ones with really fat but short barrels (twin AC/20s). Shadowhawks -- whose armor is typically equal to that of Ravens -- are superior in armor to the almighty and lore-superior Hunchback. Don't take them lightly.

When you narrow down the choices of mechs that you might want, swing by and ask for some advice. Personally I'll short-cut and tell you that due to pricing quirks, the "M" variants of the 55 ton mechs (and any mech that comes with DHS and an XL engine) are much cheaper to buy from the factory than it is to take another variant of the same chassis and give it the DHS and XL engine. Sometimes the savings is as much as 3,000,000 .

If you need or want someone to drop with, I'm available.

Thanks everyone. I've found hte MWO community to be a good one. Currently playing LOTRO and getting bored, I need a new fix. Next step is to find a group of people to play with as that always makes the game more fun.

I guess I saw the MC price and C-Bill price and thought you needed both to purchase. I didn't realize it was one or the other.

Fantastic advice on the M class. That's exactly what i need to know. I'm a casual gamer so my earnings will be hard fought and I like to make sure I spend thiem wisely.

There are a few items that are cheap that are worth sinking real world money into.

1) Mech bays as you only start with 4. The mech bays are 300MC a piece, so for $6.95 (the cheapest MC package) you can double your bay count

2) Premium Time is purchased with MC in game from the store tab under the last option (my apologies, the name of that escapes me at the moment). Premium TIme is relatively cheap does a good job of cutting down the grind with mechs.

3) A hero mech gives a 30% cbill boost when run in a match, which can be useful in cutting down the grind. This boost is a permanent fixture of the mech and stacks with premium time for an 80% cbill boost, which can make the cbills add up pretty quickly. Be careful, though. Hero mechs cost 75MC per ton, so the price for some of them can surpass $30. The cheapest is the Commando hero, The Death's Knell, for 1875MC. The most expensive is the Atlas hero, The Boar's Head, for 7500MC.

Re: #3

If you don't need the latest and greatest... wait for while. Most hero mechs go on sale for 30-50% off at some point. No need to spend 7500 wen you can spend 3750. ;)
