A tactic I have noticed happening more recently is a big mech will pin another against a wall and alpha continuously until either one is knocked out. Quite annoying. I'd really like to put my fist through a cockpit in these instances (or a hatchet).

That was one of the tactics the IS used against the Clans that the clans were stymied by, so, PUT IN MELEE!!!
AND put collisions back in so I can scrape spiders and jenners off the soles of my Victors stompys

Just make an attack with a range of 2-5 meters (based on mech class) that does mediocre damage (based upon tonnage) and high screen shake.
The damage should only be decent for mechs like the Hatchetman who actually have a weapon. (and increase their range some - though still very low)
With that low of range, using melee outside of a current face-hug scenario would really only be viable for fast mediums/heavies. (lights damage should be too low - and you'd need the speed to be able to close consistently)

If they make an entirely new system - yes.
If they just make it an EXTREMELY short ranged attack with mediocre damage & high cockpit shake - it shouldn't. (except the graphics I suppose)
The graphics, the physics and hit detection of moving limbs, a whole new kind of HSR...these are the first things that come to mind. I am sure there are many others.

Collisions, yes. The game required higher pilot skill when they were in the game.
But melee? In a real-time first-person shooter? No thanks. Boxing is bad enough in an actual boxing game.
