I don't know about you but I love to mess around with my engines/armor/loadout. But something about the upgrades section doesn't make sense. Why, when I pay thousands of cbs to upgrade my stuff do I have to pay to downgrade to my original stuff which I should keep in inventory or something. Right?

Well if you look at it both ways 'standard internals,' 'standard armor,' 'single heatsinks,' and 'standard guidance' can be considered space-saving 'upgrades' over 'Endo-steel internals,' 'Ferro-fibrous armor,' 'double heatsinks,' and 'Artemis guidance.' The reverse of course saves weight and or offers some minor improvements...at the cost of critical slot space. Major critical slot space in the case of Ferro-fibrous armor and Endo-steel upgrades.

Another way to look at it is from the viewpoint of the 'technicians' in game. Artemis and standard guidance are exempt...but when it comes to armor, internals, and heatsinks, there's major overhauling of the mech' required to swap these out compared to swapping weapons and engines or adding more like heatsinks. For armor and internals they have to switch everything on the mech' out, adjust how everything will fit, modify mount locations for actuators, myomers, the gyro, the engine...everything on the rig already. And in the case of heatsinks they have to modify the engine; an important and expensive component in and of itself; to accept the new heatsinks proper.
Granted this is all "horse-puckey details not needed it's just a vidya game" but it adds just a bit of extra realism to it all. The Mechwarrior games started as simulators after all...

How desperate for validation do you need to be to "Like" your own posts?

That response would have been surprising from pretty much anyone else.

You've become predictable, man.

It's the tech's man! They gotta work overtime to yank that crap off!

But seriously, just build on external sites such as http://smurfy-net.de

You can save loadouts and refer to them when it comes to actual build time...

One word: the unions.

Any work done on your mech has to be done by those union technicians otherwise they will strike and no mechs will be maintained.

Homeowner: "Dear sir, please install this new refrigerator in my kitchen and place the old one in my basement."

MaytagMan: "Right away sir, that will be $X.XX in labor."

<1 week later>

Homeowner: "Dear sir, I have changed my mind, please take my new fridge and put in the basement then take my old fridge and put it back in my kitchen."

MaytagMan: "Right away sir, that will be $X.XX in labor."

Homeowner: "What do you mean? I already own both refrigerators!"

MaytagMan: "Yes sir, that is true, which is why I quoted you the cost for labor, not for the refrigerators."

Homeowner: "Why yes, of course, silly me. Labor has value, my apologies."

-----

That's why.

Don't be obtuse.

Your pilot doesn't switch out the internal structure on his mechs any more than my example homeowner is moving his own refrigerators.

Look at any air force you like the pilots don't maintain their planes air crew do, a mechwarriors skills lie in combat he knows how to use the weapons for best effect but probably could not realign the focusing disc on his medium laser to save his own life.

Maintaining a complex machine needs specialists and for those you pay, unless your the clans in which case the techs do what you say or get killed for disrespecting a warriors orders.

I'm not sure, man. I only use the browser based Smurfy. But there are quite a few builders out there.

Some other cool stuff

Go to a mechanic and ask them to replace your custom headers with the stock manifold will they do it for free? No they wont, this should answer our question.

Because our engine, weapon, equipment, and jump jet swapping is done for free, that's why.

Oh wait.

All of those components are also fully warrantied against damage, both accidental and intentional, no questions asked.

No, they charge because they can.

They use it as a minor Cbill sinkhole.

If they were charging for mechanical work, then repairing your mech after every battle, and especially every center repair loss would cost far more.

Call it what it is.
