I would like to suggest you make the patches download while playing. The mechs that aren't downloaded yet can appear in polygon form until the rendered versions are downloaded, ala WARCRAFT.
It would make the game much more playable with just a few hundred megs downloaded. The people with the high-end video cards are going to wait for the whole thing to download before they play anyways.

I don't know, this seems quite complicated. Would be best to just wait for download. Besides, there's all kinds of content included in patches that might not work.

@barcef
the game is only a 3.5GB download.. compared to WoW which is 30+ GB..
mechs aren't the biggest part of the download its the maps that take up most of that 3.5GB.. also.. once u have it downloaded copy it to USB stick for safe keeping(update weekly to keep up to date) .. If you ever need to reinstall or someone you know wants to try the game out u can then just copy it off the stick which should take about 20min to do, which is better then spending an hr or 2 downloading it.(shortcut to launcher is in "...PiranhaGames/MechWarriorOnline/Bin32" copy "MechWarriorOnline.exe" to desktop)
mechs are a very small amount of the download(maybe only few hundred mbs for all of them).. comparing it to WoW is like comparing apples and oranges, its not the same thing..
wow only downloads what you need to start playing the game, which is the starting zone, the closest major city in that zone and Ogrammar.. after that it starts to download zones closest to your first starting point or zones you need after your done with the zone your in..
MechWarrior on the other hand cant do that cause most of the size of the download is maps.. if they did what you asked, we would only get the UI, mechs an the training grounds first, then the rest of the maps 1by1.. and that wouldn't make for fun games cause you would be stuck playing afew maps at a time till move downloaded..
