Goofing around with MW4 Mercenaries and was reminded about wide and narrow radar. Is this a Battletech distinction? Google search returned ONE hit so I'm not sure. If so, is it dated technology?

Greetings,
Yes, this topic has been up many times before, mostly under the ECM threads and sensors effects.
Also listed under the 'Active' and 'Passive' radar section within some threads comments.
Now for game suggestions this thread should be moved to, the 'Feature Suggestions' section of the forums.

Dude, do you even read the OPs before posting?

@OP: IIRC there are no active or passive radar modes in TT, but you could switch between different kinds of sensors like standard, seismic, heat, and IR&Magscan to detect hidden units. But this is an advanced rule (for double-blind games), because in normal play, all units are visible regardless of sensors or line of sight.

Ursus I miss playing MW4 in competitive leagues you had standard a 360 degree short range radar plus night vision IR etc. so no blind spots unlike mwo has a lot of blind radar spots which for 2950-3050 was not standard radar. Plus you could go active or passive.MW2-MW4 has so many more radar choices.

http://www.sarna.net...ems_.26_Sensors says that there are a variety of sensors, some are active and others are passive, which are all integrated by the battle computer into the display. The operator can also manually manipulate and focus the different sensor inputs.
I think this is the key for going forward. Maybe have low-resolution inputs that become higher resolution as the number of inputs increase. And some inputs can be high-resolution on their own (eg TAG).

Different radar ranges are mentioned in the battlemech write up in the CBT companion (much of which was reworked for the Techmanual write up)
A 2km radius short range and a 32 square km sweep being mentioned.
The Companion also mentions that the pilot could augment what ever display with elements other displays, so that if he was viewing thermal he could have the terrain in regular light and only display mechs in thermal, or he could augment Low light with thermal data and so on.
Common sensors include Thermal, low light, UV, Motion Tracking, LIDAR, RADAR, & MAD (Magnetic Anomaly) less common sensors includes Microwave, chemical detectors & Seismic distortion.
While the default display is a Traditional HUD, many pilots opt for (at lest partial) Helmet display, many succession wars era helmets did have a HMD due to them being a bit clunky. A tech only needs six hours to switch the display configuration.
It also mentions that battlemechs can data link their sensor data, using a dedicated coms channel, though it mentions that this is difficult to maintain in combat, but can be effective if done (This is not talking about the independent C3 system). Also that sensors are triple redundant and located through out the mech.
