Crashes can have a very wide range of causes.
you need to get in touch with support@mwomercs.com who will request your DXdiag and crash logs to investigate.
Running the repair tool or reinstalling can help, depending on what the issue is.

Is anything different compared to usual?
For example, did you install something new that runs in the background? The game eats through processor power and if your system isn't high end and you start adding stuff, there's a chance it can't run it all. Or that it gets a bit too hot.

Or even something that doesn't run in the background - I cannot run several of my games while I have

Unusual, I got 4 of the 5 of them installed and no trouble. o.O; But it could be something shared between 'em. Mine all get installed on a completely separate drive from my main one.

That's what the IT guys kept saying - but I rather doubt the original Age of Empires and AC share much.

And only on the one tower at that - computers are weird sometimes.

If it is a problem like that though - the odds of him figuring it out are slim - only reason I figured that one out is because installing AC was the only change I had made to my computer in months - empirical testing supported it (IE uninstalling AC - AOE didn't work - unin/reinstalling AOE afterwards - it worked again... until I re-installed AC) but I still have no explanation on why.

+1 just for playing AoE. That game made my childhood.

Some suggested to me to clear my cache files. My crashes are rare and have always happened just as combat is about to begin (a very interesting trend I might have to observe further) and I haven't played the game enough of times to be able to call a statistical yes for sure yet. However, there is no harm in trying it and when it does solve the problem, well... problem solved.
