I haven't used my HM in awhile and when I looked at it yesterday it said the max jump distance was over 60 meters... Has it always been like that?

Depends on how many JJs you have. Recent JJ changes and highlander changes may affect the heavy metal, and this may explain why this is happening. Test it out in battle then you can determine how it feels now, not sure as I don't have a heavy metal myself. JJ changes made multiple JJs more uplifting and flying higher while the highlander has been nerfed a bit, once again not sure how it feels.

The jump distance in meters was never very helpful anyway. Not sure if any of the numbers actually changed even though JJ were nerfed. The important thing is if you are getting the JJ performance you want and sounds like you're happy with it :) I guess you're bringing more than one lonely jump jet.

You have a mix of a nerf and a buff.

Nerf in turning speed and single JJ performance.
Significant increase in multi JJ performance.
