The 3rd Takata Lancers of House Kurita would like to thank Peiper and Conners, plus the additional scorekeepers for organising and running the event, also the LCAF Hub for hosting the event.

Overall for the Lancers the event was for the most part good and fun, however, as much as I liked the way You had all decided to score the event, it still with the way Matchmaker currently works left for a lot of particularly painful variables and matches, and with the randomness of who you could drop with made certain matches for both our lances particularly brutal.

I can see that running the 1/1/1/1 was an attempt to stop players running meta/fotm lance setups and to try and build balanced lance build ups, but with matchmaker left player groups badly outtonned or up against heavy meta/fotm groups. I even enjoyed a lot of the challenge of going up against that, however if it was noticeable for my players, am sure it effected more.

Anyway, aside from that, I was glad to see so many players on and participating in the event, it was unfortunate about the 'times' for the first event ;) Hopefully if you guys run another event you can get it right!

First of all, thank you guys for providing a great event for all of us, kudos my friends.

ManaValkyrie - 1/1/1/1 setup helped more with leveling field for participants than it screwed with our chances in machmaker, at least that was our expirience (not to say that few times we accidentaly synchdropped with another lances, once even with Wolf Clan lance on our side ;), it tells me that machmaker was cosidering our setups and mached together the participating lances many times)

Oh I dropped with against some balanced lances, and often against my other units lance, never said it wasnt fun or challenging. I didn't say it screwed with our chances, but running up against groups of Meta/Fotm specific chassis because ultimately MM doesnt presently care about weight balance.

And unfortunately I know full well where my drop range of players ends up, my point was more that it was nice to be different but I do know some groups got rough deals in some of there drops at different times.

4th Regulan Hussars thank everyone involved with the tournament, it was a great fun for us.
Whenever there's a chance to participate again, we'll do out best to field a lance or two.

Kudos to all the participants!

While we finished last we had a blast (Hey, we are Mercenary Unit Expendable, what do you expect?).

Thanks to all at House Steiner for setting this up. and thanks for the great organization that made this happen, I just hope my unit will do better next time.

I look forward to any future events, and let me know if we can assist in any way!

Cheers and respect from [MUX]

Buckminster Guards Armored Cavalry would also like to thank the whole team that helped put this together and run the event. We really enjoyed ourselves and believe this sort of thing should happen more often.

Although I spent both the EU and NA portions of this competition punching calculator buttons instead of my Auto-cannon triggers, it was both an honor an a privilege to work as a Score-Keeper / Screen Shot verifier for this event with Silent-Monk, for Merlin and Peiper.
Each an every Lance-Leader we worked with displayed patience, honor, respect and integrity, and their respective commanders should be proud of them. For a time limited event of 2 and a half hours, this was both a relief and helped make this the success it was by preventing drama.
It is my hope that both Commander Peiper an Loremaster Merlin will allow me to contribute to future events.

Somebody has to be the average, unwashed masses who soak up the bullets for the heroes. It just so happens we in MUX excel at this. :)

Seriously, it was kinda hillarious the way it went. We did a few drops before the tournament to get warmed up, and those actually went fairly well, and then the actual tournament drops arrived and... BOOOM! AC20 Headshot! (literally in one case for one of our players :o ). Suddenly it was as if the quality of opponents shot through the roof. Performance anxiety on the part of our old geezer selves perhaps? :D

Anyway, it was fun and like Fuzzy said, hopefully MUX will participate in future events and, if nothing else, make all the rest of you look good by comparison.

So, Peiper, when will the next one be arranged?
Everyone i know who participated in this are saying that it was the most fun they have had in this game! And I think it's a great initiative with a low level entry, and perfect for those that want some competitive feel and don't have a 12-man team to drop with.

That's a good question. I think launch module is going to be exciting for everyone, and I certainly want to do a variety of experiments with it: semi-stock matches, training, trials of position, and most especially arranging Devil Dog vs. Devil Dog matches! Just because we THINK we know how the launch module will work, I'm adopting a wait-and-see approach to it. I have no doubt PGI is going to run some events too, and they won't announce those until after the launch module is released. I don't want to schedule drops OVER that.

There are also other considerations - what if's that will be hard to predict before we actually TRY the launch module. I don't know what those will be, but there are BIG questions we'd have to answer like: do we enforce tonnage limits, and will we see what the enemy will bring before we drop so we can take a moment to add up THEIR tonnage before the drop to keep each other honest? The FRR is putting on 'Solaris VII House Championship' where all mechs have a 29 point or less alpha. I like rules like that, but trying to keep track of what the enemy is armed with could cause a nightmare for the scorekeepers and accusations of cheating. One of the things that has helped keep the tournament fun for all is running it on the KISS rule.

One of the strengths of the Clan Invasion tournaments is the one-off quality. You don't have to keep coming back day after day or week after week. So many of us have jobs, kids, etc... So, we have to put everything into a model like that.

Another issue is scorekeeping. The last one we did required four scorekeepers, all of which who had to be constantly vigilant.

Here's another question: Do we run in 12 v 12 drops, but have 3 lances assigned to each 12 man - allowing for people to bring lances, but be randomly paired with one or two other lances? I think that would be a lot of fun, and I do like varying things up and keeping it fresh for everyone!

What about 6 v 6?

I have two tournaments in mind. One is similar to how I ran Mechwarrior Dark Age tournaments on the tabletop: swiss pairs up to a certain point. Then have the top players (lances) face off against each other in the finals.

I also have a planetary capture/map based challenge in mind. This has a LOT of variables to consider - some of them being: how do you keep the factions equal? The Clan Invasions have always been lopsided in numbers toward the Inner Sphere groups. That won't work if we have say, a planetary capture fight between the IS and Clans. The we have to figure out: who is attacking where? Who gets to start off on the attack, and who on the defense - if the planets take multiple battles to conquer. If each planet is one battle to take it, that's simple enough.

Anyway, QuimMorius, the ideas are out there, but until we see how private matches go, I'm not going to schedule anything.

Which reminds me: private matches of 4 v 4 or whatever will require lance leaders to have premium time. Is that something we're all ready for?

Cheers!

Here's a question for you all. I've always believed that sportsmanship and comradery are what make team games great. When I think of the tabletop tournaments I've been in, I've always gone for the 'best sportsman' award - though admittedly, I rarely ever got it, but that's another story... lol

Russ has suggested that PGI may support community run events and tournaments with some sort of prize support or packages. My first response to such a prize package is actually to REJECT their offer of prize support. Here's why: because prizes often bring out the WORST in people, not the best. If you've listened to my speeches at the end of the tournaments I've always stated that community is very important. The game is a pvp game, and the game would stink if we can't find other people to play against! Poor sportsmanship, metagame exploits, rules lawyering and petty squabbles can drive away casual or otherwise good-natured players. Competition IS fun, but the tournaments are like one-night stands. No matter what happens that Saturday, you're going to wake up to face each other again in the next morning.

Giving out sportsmanship awards is easy in a tabletop venue, because you actually SEE, talk to, and play with your opponents. You remember: that guy wouldn't give me a re-roll when my dice fell off the table - or - that guy let me move my unit out of turn because I forgot about it, that was nice of him. So, when everyone does their secret vote at the end of the tournament, there's often a clear winner, or a least a tie, and you can then vote again. In MWO it is harder. You don't actually SEE your opponent, and most of the time, the only talking you do is before a match via text chat. Still, I wonder:

If we could give out sportsmanship awards HOW would we determine who wins? What kind of criteria would be used? What suggestions do you guys and girls have?

I have to agree about prizes. Those are absolutely not a good idea because otherwise decent, perfectly pleasant and reasonable people often turn into greedy, remorseless ******** when there's actually something of value beyond "bragging rights" to win.

As for sportsmanship awards, hard to see how that could be done in MWO. As you said there's not much to judge that by unlike the tabletop examples you mentioned. As far as I'm concerned the fun of participating should be the biggest draw, and hopefully enough to get a good amount of people to sign up.

First off I'd like to say that Team Cortez Merc Corps (TCMC) had a blast at the tournament. It was a great moral booster and has helped to generate activity for us.

That said, I believe that bragging rights are the main reward for players in a tournament such as this. After the tournament results my unit spent a solid hour in our voice channels talking about the tournament, laughing, and congratulating each other. To a large extent simply knowing that other units around us know that we participated in force and brought home those bragging rights is our reward.

The first tournament like this that was held (Steiner vs. Clan Wolf) had some of the NGNG guys play through; PGI gave them some codes for a couple free days of premium time to give to 1st place winners. I don't think that every tournament should have rewards like this, but something as small as 1 free premium day for each member of the lances that took home a trophy (1st, 2nd, 3rd). The reward is small enough that it won't attract a bunch of problem pilots (who wants to blow an afternoon for a single day of premium?) but is a reward none the less. This could also help to build a better community relations image for PGI. PGI may not want to give away something to each lance that places (4 categories, 3 places, 4-5 pilots per lance = 48-60 free days), but even giving to 1st place guys can endear PGI in the community's eyes and add a cherry on top of those bragging rights.
