To share my experience with the latest GPU i bought running MWO:

I upgraded from the AMD HD 6950 to the Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X OC and found that card a tad more noisy than my 6950.
I was thinking that was normal bcs the higher performance is more power expensive and thus needs higher rpm coolers.

I was mistaken bcs it came out the cooler had a defect making 1 of the 2 Fans stop and the second Fan had to do the work for both at insane rpm.

I got a new replacement card now and while playing games (especially MWO) it stays almost silent at the "Idle Desktop Noise Level".

Its really night and day!

So if your new GPU becomes loud in games it may be the Cooler is not working...

Yeah Sapphire's Vapor-X cards aren't just amazing, they have to my knowledge, the best air coolers on the market, bar none (best cooling, decently quiet). It looks like Sapphire even fixed the lack of a back bracket that killed some of their 7000 series cards.

I personally like ASUS's DirectCu II cooler that they've been using for the last couple generations. It runs cool, quiet, and doesn't accumulate dust. It sure beats the hell out of the horrible reference cooler design with the squirrel cage impeller fan thing. God, I have a GTX 570 in my secondary machine with one of those; when running at full tilt it sounds like it's spooling up to warp speed...
