In the past they were big jokes, and we the community would tell PGI improve them all, they drive away, new starts.
Not any longer.
The Stalkers mean, and I loath XL's in assaults
Match score 101 3 kills 1 assist and over 900 damage, in fact, I out scored any other three of my team (glares long and hard at the ELO) yes we, *coughs* they, failed hard.
So we and PGI can no longer blame the mechs for failing to keep new players, and I get to brag about how L££T I'm not *face palms*

Trial Stalkers are my favorite targets in my Jenner and Cicada. Their rear torso armor is paper thin, they turn slow, and their point defenses are crap. Even better, they tend to hang waaayy behind the fight, all alone on a hilltop somewhere, with no friends close by to bail them out.
Combine all of that with the fact that they're usually piloted by wet-behind-the-ears rookies and my only thought on seeing that trademark thin stream of LRMs painting a giant "I'm over here!" sign in the sky is "Mmm, lunch!"
My personal best so far is 3 Stalkers in a row (plus a random Dragon) on Alpine.

It is interesting to me that the trial mechs are all champs now; I consider this to be an acknowledgement that the current mechanics have broken a good chunk of what the game is based on. Frankly, the trial mechs will never be particularly awesome, because half the game is building to your play style. This is not to mention that they are generally specialized to a particular meta, and do not stand up to ongoing adjustment and balancing.
Ehh, it's no use griping about it I guess. I would love it if the stock designs were workable, but I know that would take a considerable balancing effort that at this point will simply not happen.
