While an Atlas may be a bit underpowered, and unable to use things like XL engines as well as other assaults, it is hardly as weak as you say.

If you are using a 300 engine you are doing it wrong.

The Atlas is underpowered regardless of what engine you put in it. The D-DC is still the best variant, but with 5 different ways to counter ECM, the D-DC isnt nearly as good as it once was. Other assaults are now better.

What PGI needs to do is give every mech a unique master skill. The Atlas' unique master skill should give it damage reduction. The Atlas should be the best tank in the game and currently its not. In fact light mechs can tank better than Atlases which is dumb.

Examples of possible unique master skills:

Atlas- durallex heavy special armor (X% damage reduction on center and side torsos)

Stalker- combat computer (energy/missile weapons that take up 1 crit slot or less generate X% less heat)

Awesome- ppc augmentation (erppc/ppc ghost heat limit is increased to 3. ppcs no longer have a mnimum range but if fired at targets 90m away or less the awesome will suffer X% feedback damage. additionally erppcs generate -X heat)

Highlander- death from above ( X% lower chance to fall down when performing death from above attacks. Additionally fall/collosion damage to the highlanders legs is reduced by X% and damage done to other mechs is increased by X%.)

The Atlas is awesome, always has been awesome, and will continue to be awesome. You just gotta stop trying to compete with other mechs on their home turf and play up to it's strengths. It can't pop tart, it can't hill-hump, it can't LRM boat. What it can do, with good piloting, is maneuver close to an enemy and grind them into a fine powder. Having a mostly fresh Atlas appear in your flank is a gg provided the pilot isn't awful.

Signed, someone who started way back in CB with an Atlas, and who has spent an alarming amount of time in it's cockpit.

Atlas isn't a boating Mech, that is his biggest weakness. You can't make it exclusively energy boat, ballistics boat or missile boat. You have to combine your armament, which requires more flexibile pilot to shine. Other than that, STD300 isn't enough, it has been said already and it has to be stressed out. At least STD320, if you please.

Compared to the E variant of the Banshee, the Atlas is underpowered. It brings way more firepower to the battlefield than the Atlas. The only bright spot for the Atlas is ECM.
