Although it's not even in the same genre as MWO, WoW comes to mind, and the PVP facet of that franchise. In the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, world PVP was introduced, and with each subsequent patch and/or other expansion you get stuff injected into the game that many people opt for instead of creating something more unique/diverse.
Going back to MWO; there's always going to be players who take the quick & easy route for money/victory. For some of those people, it may be because the current Meta appeals to their play-style. For others it might be because they just don't have the same level of skill in developing their own unique/effective builds. Whatever the reason may be, the Meta-game is always going to be a part of this game, and whether it shrings to a specific category of players, or blossoms into a giant, overgrown, poorly-tended monster that everyone and their dog seems to get behind, we'll have to deal with it as it evolves.
Speaking only for myself, I don't subscribe to the train of thought that poptarting and using meta-builds all or most of the time is the only way to go. IMHO, it shows a lack of imagination & narrow-mindedness. Now, that's not to say that I haven't tried some of the Meta-builds, only that I don't see the value in playing Meta-builds to the exclusion of EVERYTHING else, all the time. I enjoy experimenting, and that's the idea we should empress upon others. Thanks for your indulging me
