I think this is what i'm missing. Where exactly did it become iconic?
I'm re-collecting/re-reading the entire BT/MW novel series. So far i'm 23 publications in, in roughly IS timeline chronological order, and a UM hasn't had a single appearance or mention yet.

It was never Iconic from a canon perspective. The player base made it Iconic. There is love for the scrappy-trash-can-that-could. Its been glorified by the player base.
And I don't know if you can call it really Iconic as the word is defined, but it is significant to a passionate segment the player base, so it maybe iconic to them. But when I think Mechwarrior or Battletech, Urbanmech its probably the 50th thing I think of, so its not Iconic to me.

It was one of the 3 mechs that ambushed Justin Allard on Solaris when he was facing Capet for the championship in the finale of Warrior En Guard.
Only mention I remember it in the books.
Its mostly a BG thing.
In the table top, the urbie is a terrible mech, but its a terribly CHEAP mech as well. At under 500 points when more typical "decent" mechs come in at around 1500 points, Urbie swarms can be deceptively deadly given that the AC 10 is actually a fairly rugged weapon in TT. And there is also an AC 20 version by cannon.
Given their slow speed, they also are deceptively lethal as a mech that supports smaller infantry blocks in combined arms games.
They are a joke of a mech, but a joke of a mech with weapons that can do some serious harm if underestimated. Especially with "urbie swarms" given their cheap price.
Its why you get comics like this crop up around the BG (The one that the video is based on):

It's a super cheap heavy hitter with jump jets.
Best in cities, with low running and repair costs.
You could buy and maintain a full squad of urbies for the price of one Atlas.
It's also great fun and sort of snow balled.
In MWO, it'd make a great mech defensively anyway, but if they're going to give it spider speeds... Holy crap.

Man, if I can run a 6-machine gun Urbie, I'll have to dig out one of those 6MG spider sits from way back and have some fun.

And that is not all, in the novel Tactics of Duty Alexander Carlyle in a gray death battle armor takes command of some kind of tank and destroys a leg of an Urby by ramming it while on an infiltration mission gone bad

If the Urbie rushes Omega, the defending team are either out for coffee, or ended up being dropped off in the wrong zone.

As the others said - it was mostly a TT thing
In it's native environment (because where else are you gonna find the trash can?!) equal BV Urbies and Timberwolves....
The wolves are gonna have (at best!) a rough time.
At worst - they all die.
Of course...
Outside it's native environment it goes the other way (if the Urbies manage to hit the TW at all!)
But that is another story.
