Having recently mastered 2 orions and a protector, I have to agree with OP. This thing is a piece of crap that gets turned into mulch if you are exposed for a few seconds. Your only real hope is having other targets nearby for the enemy to hopefully choose, so that your armor lasts long enough to confront an enemy who is opened up and can be quickly killed. It feels more like a slow hunchback than a fast atlas.

Dude, in this game anything that stands exposed for a few seconds has a chance to get turned to mulch. I've seen Atlases and Banshees go from 100% to dead in less than 5 seconds.
I don't know what game some of you guys are playing, but the MWO I play is unforgiving, and the lethality of the environment gets worse the more I play. If you're piloting anything larger than a light, it's madness to stand exposed--even at long range there's a good chance you'll get pummeled.

I just bought an -M variant last night. I went full STD armor, and kept the XL300, but changed the weapon loadout from stock. I'm still not done tinkering with it, as it's too hot right now with 3 LL's, LB10X, and 2 LRM 5's. And I'm only running 14 DHS's. Chainfiring the LL's as much as possible.
After dropping in around 6 matches, I'd say it tanks better than my Thud's or Jagers, but not as good as my 'phracts. I got focused down by an entire lance of heavies and assaults on Crimson under the overhang. I knew I was dead, but went down firing, took 2 of them with me, and honestly, lasted longer than I expected to in that fight. No mech would have survived that anyway, so I can't fault the mech for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We were getting rolled anyway, so it was "blaze of glory" time.
It's a "Pug's Life" for me...
My K/D is 6/5 for a 1.20, which isn't great, but neither am I, just a casual player. And I'm still working it out with this variant.

Orion best mech. It's just better for me than any other mech I own. Twist properly and you can tank as well as any heavy. The tonnage allows for some serious firepower too. Dem LLs. Dat AC20. Dem SRMs. Dat holy speed (64.8kph - the speed of all good mechs like the hunch, battlemaster, etc)
Get rekt haters
I'm actually serious about all these points. Orion's effin' A

I find the orion is perhaps the mech that most tells me if I've done a good job of twisting to avoid damage. When I do, it soaks damage like a sponge, and is extremely durable. When I don't, I lose torsos very quickly. I think overall it's fine (but I wouldn't run an XL in a brawling orion), but it certainly makes me consider how I'm playing when I'm in one.

I have nearly 1000 drops in Orions since I bought the Protector on day 1 back in the CT bullseye days. Since the hitbox change, it is a fantastic damage soaking chassis. There are ton's of great builds for it. I use STD 295 for close range brawler builds like (ER)PPC, AC20/2xAC5, 2ML, AMS and XL335 or XL350 for long range fire support/3rd line builds like AC10, 2LL, PPC, AMS or 2AC5/2ERLL/AMS. You can save a few tons by dropping arm armor to 40 and leg armor to around 50 since those never get targeted on an Orion. If you want, you can ride the LRM train for 30 round salvos at a time. I run into the same problem OP has sometimes though, but it's my fault as a pilot. Everyone aims for your AC side since you lose most of your firepower that way just like an Atlas. Being thoughtful about positioning is getting increasingly important these days. LRM boats and poptarts are lurking around every corner and four mans love to target the same mech at the same time. You also want to get your shots in and kill some red team. Not to sound harsh, but OP needs to change tactics and practice up a bit more. The chassis is fine, if not wonderful. Getting Elite goes a long way too.
