Hey, thanks again to everyone for the help.

I picked the Shadow Hawk 5-M as suggested and learned the basics of the game through trial and error pretty much.
I made alot of loadouts for it and enjoy it. My favourite loadout is 2xAC2 + 2xMedium Laser + 2xStreak-SRM2. I bought a standard engine to fit the AC20 but that was a bad decision because I didn't like the playstyle of a super close range brawler.

I really like the Shadow Hawk because of the versatility. I have looked at some other mechs and most of the seem to follow a specific way how you play them (like rockets or energy specialised).

I think once I am done customising Shadow Hawk 5-M loadouts I will buy an assault mech, most of the time I am hugging a wall and unload on enemies and I assume assaults are better for that job.

Can you guys suggest me an assault with similiar versatility to the Shadow Hawk? It is between VTR-9B, VTR-9S, HGN 733C, AS7-D-DC or the AS7-D. (I went for a minimum hardpoint of 2 in each category [missile, energy, ballistic] so I can play alot of styles (: )

By versatility do you mean weaponry, or in ways you can play?
N/m I see what you're wanting.

Of that list, Victors running the build you described can channel everything into arm aiming so they can really focus their firepower.
Highlanders cannot focus their energy weapons (its torso bound, like the ACs are on the Shadowhawk).
Atlases have torso bound ballistics (so just like the Shadowhawk) but cannot jump.

Victors are the cheapest in that category.

Remember you can make any mech better by having 3 variants to level up (pilot skills tree), then keep the one you like most.

One piece of advice, don't sell the engine. Actually, never sell any engine you only have 1 of. That way if you need that engine down the road, you don't have to buy back at full price.

Same with weapons, though if you find you have 38 Medium Lasers, you can probably sell a few ;)

Also, before you buy an assault, you will probably want to buy 2 more Shadowhawks to unlock the Elite skills.

Short version, you need three different types of the same mech (ie variants of that chassis) to unlock Elite. To unlock Master you have to have all Elite skills on three mechs in that weight class.

Rule of thumb is your first mech in a weight class you get Elite on all three. If you do that with the SHDs, then your next medium you will only have to get Basic on all three to unlock Elites, so you "grind" out basic on a Cicada, sell it and buy another, sell it then buy the one you want and take it all the way to Master. :)

I'd say you should master the Shadow Hawks, then aim for an assault. All of them are pretty versatile and usually have a good amount of weaponry. If you want purely variety, Atlas, Victor, and Highlander are not bad. Koniving pretty much covered everything I said though here.

Hey, thanks again for the helpful comments I am still torn between Atlas D-DC and the Victor 9B but I will eventually decide it once I have enough money.

Big thanks for everyone helping me out - MWO has a really good community so far I like it.

The real question is do you jump?
If yes, Victor.
If no, Atlas.

Couldn't you loan him one of your 100+ mechs, Koniving? He'll clean it up when he returns it, I'm sure.

I only jump to position myself for some better angles in combat. I have seen some people fly around and shoot lasers but I rather fight in tight corners and hug cover.

Well with the Victor you can do that.
As the Atlas, you are the cover that the Victor hides behind.

Definitely have a look at the "avoid the allure of the Atlas" thread. I got vids there in the Atlas that you may want to see.
