All of the ACs in MWO are based upon the ACs from table top Battletech (the game that the Mechwarrior franchise is based upon). TT Battletech classifies modern tank cannons as "Rifles", which are not powerful enough to do serious damage to the armor available in the Battletech/MWO universe.

Just not load one in the chamber and you've got an AC5. ;-)

I'm more interesting in the burst fire mode, which is actually more in line with TT Battletech.
