However, the main problem is that the UI in the mech-lab doesn't scale to the used resolution if it's smaller than 1024x768. In practice, this means that when you set the resolution below 800x600 (via editing config files), the "play now"-button will be situated outside the viewable portion of the screen and hence, can't be clicked with the mouse cursor. However, you can still enter the "testing grounds", and the in-game graphics are properly scaled, though you'll be hard-pressed to read the text in the chat or HUD. Also, it seems that the game only supports "standard" resolutions like 640x480, 800x600 etc. so it can't be set at any custom resolution "in-between" those.
I'd imagine that simply fixing the mech-lab scaling issue, enabling genuine "custom resolutions" and adding support for adjustable size for chat & HUD-visuals would enable more players with low-end specs to enjoy the game. While I myself will eventually have hardware that will play the game (hopefully) smoothly with all settings maxed, I really hope that if and when PGI would have the time, they'd look into the "low-spec experience", since getting more people (in the low-end spectrum) to play MWO would presumably be a win-win for everybody
