Do you have the required 14 crit slots for FF armor upgrade? If you do not have the space, you can not take the upgrade.

You need 14 slots to swap the armor for Ferro Fibrous. The only point to do this though is to free up a couple of tons, other than that you get the same protection as standard armor just for less tons.

See where it says, "NOT ENOUGH SLOTS"?

You need 14 free critical slots on your mech to upgrade to FerroFibrous armor.

Go into your mech's configuration through mech lab. Pull out bits & pieces (weapons, heat sinks, w/e) until there are 14 empty slots. THEN you will be able to equip FF armor, assuming you have the C-Bills for it.

Same as with EndoSteel internal structure. One of the trade-offs for the lightweight bits is that they take up more critical space in your mech.

Given that FF armor gives you 12.5% more armor for the same weight, it's not as big a deal to have. If you can only afford EITHER FF OR ES, go with ES.

**BEGIN EDITS**

1.) I see you're flying a HBK. Chances are, it's not worth losing the critical space. You'll want to cram a lot of weaponry into the right shoulder hunch. Better just forget the armor upgrade.

2.) Are you running an XL engine in that thing? If so, DON'T. That's costing you 6 critical slots, and it means that the extra-squishy shoulder will kill your mech if it's blown off. Sorry, but HBKs and XLs don't usually play well together.

**END EDITS**

You will find most times you will not go/need to have FF armor on. Take Endo first for weight savings.

Only some mechs can use FF armor effectively, most often light mechs, as they are often too light to use all their crits before running out of weight. This is, of course, on a mech loadout by mech loudout basis.

If I may be so bold as to make some suggestions on your build?

XL engine is risky, as if you lose a side torso (namely the large hunch), you will die. Consider Std engine is possible. (Depends upon preference.)
I'd almost suggest moving the MG ammo from the arm. Maybe place it into the (already maxed out crit buffer) right torso? This way, you wont lose your MG ammo when you lose your arm.
Ammo in the legs can be questionable, but ammo in the legs with reduced armor in the legs tends to be bad news. I'd almost suggest shifting that ammo into the left torso. Then fill up the rest of the torso with as many DHS as you can as crit buffers. (Even if you need to remove extra sink in the engine).
I would suggest shifting armor from the arms to the legs, or dropping a ton of AC10 ammo for maxing out the armor. (And why is one arm (especially the arm with AC10 ammo) less armored than the other arm?
I would also suggest you try to max out all torso armor, especially the hunch. If you run Std engine, the Hunch torso and the CT need the most protect you can give it.

Take these suggestions as they are please, just suggestions. Do as you wish, and whatever works for you. Just trying to give some friendly advice.

Edit:
What I might consider for that build: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...a13de80bc20bab1 (CASE optional. Well, whole mech optional!)

While normally I would recommend having 2 back armor 46 front armor, but since there are two hunches on the Grid Iron, I think I would suggest about 42-44 front and 4-6 back, which might work. Also, I would suggest AC10/LBX10 + 2 MGs on the 4G, adds on to the crit seeking effect. Grid Iron you may as well take advantage of the usable missile slot. Tesunie's build is not bad at all, though armor might work well if more to the front, as the rear armor is somewhat small and can't be targeted well.

I forgot to move rear to front after max armoring again, didn't I?

I typically run 10-15 armor on the rear of most of my mechs. I find it enough to take the occasional hit on the rear (from foe or friend...). I've also been very well known to show my rear armor if I have more armor on the back than I do the front. (AKA: If I have armor on the rear and none on the front...) Can let me escape or cause a little more damage sometimes...

I ran std 245 on my hunchies when i still had them. Should be fast enough for yours too i believe. Plus it's lighter.

Use http://mwo.smurfy-net.de/ for designing any mechs you own or plan to before hand. It allows you to design/build without the cost of in-game cbills and gives you the exact cost of your desired build.

My two cents about the Grid Iron build.

That's quite a lot of ammo for one AC/10. The ammo number doesn't look like a lot, but it goes a long way with the AC/10's rate of fire and if you make every shot count. I run 5 tons of ammo for my 2xAC/10 DakkaPult, and I still rarely run out of ammo. I'm betting you'll be de-hunched, dead, or the match will be over before you can unload all that. No insult to your skill or anything, but that's just how it turns out a lot of the time. Overloading on ammo is just a liability with ammo explosions.

I dunno about using a single MG. They're good when used in clusters, but meh if only one. Might want to use the two ballistic hardpoints for something like 2xAC5 or something.

Also dunno about using an XL engine in a Hunchie, since de-hunching the thing would kill it. It doesn't really NEED the max engine. Don't have to be particularly fast in a hunchie, being a close range street fighter/brawler and all. Granted, you could say that a de-hunched Hunchie wouldn't be of much value anyway, but the Grid Iron has two hunches. Might want to try the missile hardpoint out, especially since the SRM client-server sync was rejiggered.

Apart from dual AC5, which will make you slow, the most potent build would be the classic AC20 Hunchback. It does not have much range, but it melts faces like a champ.
