So currently I'm running the orion 1v on what I suspect some would consider an un orthodox build

12 DHS
Endo
artemis
STD 300 engine
2 med lasers
srm 6
2 x lrm 15

Its performing ok most fights though does kinda rely on the lrms, but it does contribute pretty healthily to the team in most battles.

However I was tweaking it slightly

Namely switching the srm 6 out for a streak and switching the meds out for med pulse lasers.

I'd lose some damage , Your thoughts?

Seems like it would depend if you prefer pulse over standard. Generally speaking medium lasers are the most versatile weapon in the game. A single streak launcher is rarely worth it too, you want to use at least two if you are going to bring them.

You could drop the mediums and the SRM/SSRM for large lasers.

Another one, though this uses VA instead and has something I plan to do for fun.

Change CT armor to 80 / 12. (Forgot to do that.)

My personalized version. Chain fired.
Love that DPS. "6.66"
The end of all foes.

Oh my gosh ! Sound like a lot of fun. I was looking for a 3rd Orion, might well be a VA !

@ OP
You might also try to replace the LRM15 by 1x AC5 and 1xAC/2
Play style will have to change (you need LoS all the time) but seems solid as an assault support

I agree with Kon that the VA is the better LRM boat although I prefer running it XL300 XL330, TAG, BAP, 2xALRM15, 2xSSRM and an AC2. It does ugly things to mechs between 180-270m.

I'd rather build the V around ballistics and streaks or SRMs.

I love my Orions with XL engines and dual large lasers in the arm, supplement with other weapons as desired. More LRMS, a pair of LLs, and a large but lightweight XL engine :( My 1V currently has 2 LLs and 3 LRM15s on a 300xl.

Kon:
Nice, i was planning to get some ideas for my shiny new va. I don't have the v, bought the k and hero variants instead, though i think the k's a good variant as it has 2 ballistic slots.

OP:
This is the v build i considered while deciding on variants to purchase - orion v
I was looking at using ballistics for ranged combat instead of missiles, in case you ever tire of lrms :(

This is what i'm currently trying out on my va - orion va
It's similar to your v, without the srms. It's really good when i'm around 200-400m, but it gets really tough when there's strong ecm cover or when they close in real fast. Am thinking of switching 2 lrms for srm4s to try it out

I wnt remove lrms due to the fact I like to be able to actually hit that light when it whacks on the great escape tune and starts running all over the place. also my CT/RT/LT are usually the first places to go regardless of how much I move or twist so the XL is a scary thought to me.
