It is and it was never worth quitting over.

3rd person view gimps your arms and bounces your cursor. Just a bad way to play the game. Even new players ask how to turn it off.

Basically you've missed out on some decent gameplay over a terrible feature.

It's only good for what It shouldn't be used for (peeking, and avoiding weapon obscuring effects), and bad at what it should be for (help with piloting learning curve).

I'd say I see it used less than one percent of the time.

I use it when ever I'm in the locust. That things cockpit was designed for 3pv. The other 98% of the time in any other mech I'm in first person.

You use a locust 2% of the time? You brave soul.

Bad enough that they stuck it in the game but having it as the default camera at start is annoying.

3pv was a large waste of resources that benefited no one, actually makes it harder for new players, and which squandered a ton of Good will from the player base, needlessly alienating large numbers of users for no reason whatsoever.

It was the first in what would become a long series of obvious missteps on the part of PGI.

Yes, We still have 3rd person. Though while in 3rd Person your mech deploys a drone while in 3rd person view which can give away the location of your mech for those that are paying attention. Personally I prefer to play in the 1st Person view as silly as it may sound, I like seeing the inside of my cockpit which they have done a nice job on.

It's a great scouting tool for someone who knows how to use it without being seen. Why should it not be used as such?

Because it shouldn't be in the game in the first place?

It's handy for taking screenshots of those pebbles or small lumps in terrain that manage to stop my tank-with-legs cold . . .

I use it to look at my mechs backside, it's "junk in the trunk" so to say. That's pretty much it...

Well, I'm a practical person. It's already there so use it.

My opinion is, I like 3PV, because I like to look at my specially painted 12 meter fusion powered robot with lasers as it stomps around. It's awesome.

Trying to conduct combat operations in 3PV is suicidal unless you're just completely awesome. They nerfed it properly, and the game now has the benefits of both options.

I have never seen anyone play in 3PV except Phil from NGNG when he was previewing 3PV back when it first came out. Has zero effect on gameplay as far as I can tell.

The worst thing about 3rd Person is that it is mapped to F4 by default. I have observed players trolling newbies with the "press alt-f4 to enter/exit first person" in the chat, followed by a sudden disconnect or two. F4 should be a sacrosanct key in the stock config.

Third person is great for "Counter Intelligence" as the blinking red light on the camera drone is incredibly easy to see from a distance. It gives some of the spotting advantages of Damage Glow but without any of the ridiculous FPS penalties. Only in a Locust, as another poster mentioned, could I see using the "I am here, please shoot me" sign that is the 3rd person drone as not only is it essential with that mech's cockpit but a locust pilot should be daring everyone to try and send him sky high :)

Man, it's 2014. If someone (who is not 8 years old) still falls for this stupid alt-f4 joke, there is no hope for him.
If someone still does the alt-f4 joke in 2014, he abandoned society over a decade ago, when they got so old archeologist were needed to determine how old they actually are.
Just saying.

...then we should invite some archeologists into the MWO fold as we have quite a few bona fide fossils playing this game :D

Still, would it have killed PGI to have put it on F3 or F5 by default?

Yeah i was one of those against 3pv, but i (and i think everyone else) didn't know at the time that it was going to do mostly nothing except screw over new players.
It does still give a slight benefit to scouting...but not much.

3PV is cool if all you want to do is nostalgia from the older games that used 3PV.

Except for the fact that it went through many different design changes to stop it being too useful and then still had to get nerfed and removed from 12mans.

Yea, it got nerfed once? The 12 mans thing was because of the QQ tears of the Nile thing that happened and the devs caved in. Was it needed? Probably because there were very specific spots on some of the maps it could go unnoticed even with the blinking light.

No because you could stand behind a hill in you sniper and see all that went on.
