I'm spending the rest of my Founder's gold on this 50% off sale and am debating which mech to get.

Generally speaking I like big 'Mechs with big weapon systems and sustainable firepower. My favorite 'Mech is my Victor-DS.

My thoughts on the ON1-P are that it looks cool, but not sure how well it plays.

My thoughts on the Misery are that I can load it up with a ton of lasers and bbq things:

I do love the Protector, but I say Misery. You can duplicate a lot of Protector builds on other Orions, but the Misery is unique among Stalkers.

The Protector plays like a mini-atlas. It has a low slung should basaltic, which can hold an AC20, 2 missles and 3 lasers. I currently use this build, and have quite a bit of fun in it.

However, the Orions are prone to losing their side torsos a fair bit, almost exactly like an Atlas, too. So if you like the feel of a fast, yet lightly armed Atlas, the Protector is a good choice.

Now the Misery is a freaking tank, like all stalkers, but it feels even more tanky when brawling (Which it can be quite good at). I currently use this build on it. The Misery is the most unique stalker, as it is the only one with a ballistic hardpoint.

However, like all stalkers, it suffers from slow turning speeds, and twist speeds. Also, it is very prone to losing its side torsos, so that's why I but a LL in the CT and moved 2 to the right side, instead of having all of the weapons on the left side.

For me personally, since I have both mechs I'd go with the Misery. Both, however are good choices.

My Protector regularly nets me a few kills and oftentimes the most damage in the match. I use an XL300, 2 Large Lasers, a PPC, and a Gauss Rifle. Smurfy build here. I tend to use it the most out of my hero mechs nowadays. I very rarely have problems with losing my side torsos so the XL engine doesn't become a problem. That side torso energy mount, though, does come in handy as it's mounted higher than other Orion energy hardpoints. I don't brawl in my Orions, but having a long range direct fire loadout causes some serious havoc on enemies for some pretty great damage. Even up close the Gauss Rifle can tear into larger enemies and the large lasers being on the arms help it when dealing with smaller, faster moving enemies.

I've never used a Stalker, let alone the Misery, so I can't really speak to that.

The Protector is a decent Orion. The Misery is one of the strongest mechs in the game. Different leagues.

You may regret buying the Misery when 3-3-3-3 drops. I've got the Protector and for me it's a famine/feast mech... if I get out of position I'm screwed but it works well when I do my part... Just don't try to hillhump against Jagers or other hull-down mechs and you'll be OK. I run a 300XL with 2xAC/5 + 2PPCs, 2xAC/5 + 2LPL, or Gauss + 3LL.

Have been considering switching to dual AC/2s and altering the rest of the loadout a bit. Still deciding.

I've always wanted to buy a misery but frankly the rest of the stalkers just don't interest me so it seems like a waste for me to buy one and not master. The orions on the other hand have become some of my favorites lately. For the ON1-P I use LRM 20, 3xMPL and AC10. One of the few mech that can fire an LRM20 salvo at once from a single slot which can be devastating.

I don't have a Protector per se but I do have other Orions. The Orion-class is a very underrated mech.
Unlike many heavies, it excels with a standard engine, and you can pack in the firepower of an assault without having to go an XL.

Calling it a "mini atlas" does it a disservice - the Orion is more survivable! It is the best heavy for "sustained firepower" for sure.

However, whilst the Protector is a good mech, many Protector builds can be duplicated on other Orions; so the Protector isn't that special.

Edit: I'd also really, really recommend against an XL Orion build. I probably finish half my games with a side torso shot away. As a 75-tonner, the Orion's ability to carry a strong weapon load on a STD engine is a major selling point. If you're using an XL you probably would be better off with a JJ-capable Cataphract instead.

-------------

On the other hand, the Misery IS a unique stalker - the only one that has a ballistics hardpoint. Fitting a gauss or AC20 allows you to alleviate some of the heat problems of a Stalker whilst adding a powerful pinpoint punch. It is a hero mech which brings something that the C-bill variants do not, and ranks alongside the Ilya as a "must have" hero mech.

Edit: Here's a build I'm using currently. I prefer a 300STD engine as a bigger engine improves torso twist as well as top speed. I'd also say an AMS is a must, as the Stalker seems particularly vulnerable to LRMs.

As you'd expect, the Misery is less mobile but much tougher than the Orion. However it also has high-mounted weapons which are a major advantage.

A Misery is one of the best assaults. It's not a "mini atlas" but an atlas-killer. Only a Banshee is more scary in a head-on duel..

Get the Misery. It is a unique hero variant which brings something special to the table. It is much tougher and packs more firepower. The only reason to prefer a Protector is for its mobility and more interesting variants. And even then you may as well get free C-Bill Orion instead.
