Thunderbolt

Cataphract

Not a lot of difference between the two, Shotgun vs. SRM6, a few more points of armor vs a few more kph.
Haven't tried either yet, just playing around with Smurfy while at work.

I would consider placing the LPLs on the left side of the 1X. People often target the right torso because it usually houses an AC20. I think your weapon placement is fine on the Thunderbolt.

I've never used flamers, never been a fan, but I have noticed that a lot of people tend to panic when a mech gets up in their face and just start firing everything they have. I thought it would be a fun time to add some extra heat to their mix, just see how it works out.

I use this JM6-S build for my close up brawler. Nobody wants to be within 200m of an AC20, and the four medium lasers on top give it the alpha of a Jagerbomb (albeit 20 of its damage covering 1 second). The machineguns are just free added damage and effective when the main weaponry exposes internal structure. It has a good alpha and good sustainable dps.
Another facehugger build I run is this JM6-S build. It has a lower alpha but higher speed and higher sustained dps for swarming over a mech. It's fast enough and powerful enough to be trouble for slower mechs, and good for chasing down LRM boats.

I agree in theory, the XL engine does seem like it would be more prone to death. However, personally I’ve been paying more attention lately to see what state my mech is in when I die, and I’m surprised at the number of times I get cored.
Played for 4 hours last night (cataphract, shadowhawk, thunderbolt, battlemaster) and did not lose a side torso once. I lost a lot of arms from twisting, but everytime I died I lost the CT. Was mildly frustrating (since it meant my opponent could aim well) but the XL didn’t bother me. It just seems like everybody is aiming for the sternum these days.
Its entirely possible it will be different in a hugging mech. I figure when I get to Speed Tweak I’ll think about a standard engine.

Do you torso twist between salvos? If you're getting destroyed by CT before losing anything else it sounds like you're staring the enemy down.

But if you do want to do something like that, just use STD engines... especially on the TDR. The torsos are HUGE.
About the CTF build, if you use a STD and your RT is destroyed, you'll end up with a matchstick (only 1 flamer on the LT), which isn't an issue if you use an XL.
And don't think all pugs go for the CT, if you find more experienced players, they WILL be aiming for your RT 90% of the time.

Back in the day before PGI borked SRM's, this was the Atlas, with the meme going around of two Atlases hugging with the phrase "Die in my arms, you gorgeous metal beast!"

only time iv encountered people able to do this to me they are in a smaller mech and they die.
Its like thx i dont have to aim my guns while i have more hp.
if you are fast enough while in a heavy or something you need an xl and then you wont have the hp to live in the frontline.

The Right side has the Energy points on top, the left in the middle so this would work a little better, imo.
