For the record, yes, this is an alt account, as my original account on my original computer died. Just like my old computer finally did.
For the comment made about the history with the devs, since my time on here, I have seen and read the post about the NEW DEVS. Soo . . ., not really an issue with problems with the old devs any more. Obviously, PGI thought the old devs needed replacing as much as the community did, or they would not have replaced them. After all, "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT." Quote from whomever, whenever. Old Saying at any rate.
For those that responded that they were not sure what the post was about, it was about these three points:
1. We are members in a GAME being SOLD. So of course, like any other product, the company is after money. Hince the BEING SOLD. The fact they where nice enough to offer the ability to play it for free is a luxury. Look at FF XIV, buy it, pay per month for it. Lots of games like that.
2. Minority/majority doesn't matter. Accepting an agreement on an issue/topic/problem is what matters. As well as staying on topic. Such as not jumping off topic for "Firefly". But since some where not sure what the topic was . . .
3. Respect in game is important. Respect in the forums can be more important. Especially if you want the Forum Community to grow and be a true Community.
For the comments about Respect/Diplomacy/Compromise, and me being rude at the start and end of it, my intent was not to offend. It was just blatantly honest opinion on my part. Bluntly truthful opinion usually does offend, only because people are accustomed to having to read into things to get it, not just have it put out there like that.
AND IT SERVED ITS PURPOSE FOR NOW. NOT ONE OF YOU THAT HAVE RESPONDED SO FAR HAVE JUST BEEN CRITICAL/NEGATIVE/REPULSIVE JUST BECAUSE.
You all put thought into your responses, until it went off topic. But even then, the responses had some thought put into them.
For the sole person that mentioned that a consensus thread has been made before, thank you for the time and thoughtfulness that went into that. You had to remember that it was posted before, and took the time to write a proper response. It was blunt, but that does not bother me. As that was only part of the post, important though it was, I made a new one. Plus this will get more in-depth in a minute.
For new readers/posters, and those that have already posted. A warning so as not to intentionally offend anyone. I am blunt and frank. I do not mind an honest blunt frank opinion. But the "Black Sheep" posters that just want to troll and hate with their covert identities, just take your sign with you as you leave this thread, because any that read/follow this will know which accounts you belong to now, and will know to ignore your posts.
The second part of this "The Devs Planning"
PGI is interested not in just keeping old members, but gaining new members. Especially those that will spend money for a game they like.
I am not against this in the least. I look at all the consoles/games/computers/comp games I have bought over the course of my life, and eh, so this is a hobby I enjoy and am willing to spend money on.
I have spent money on MWO, and do not regret it, as I enjoy playing. I am the target group PGI wants to attract. Someone that will spend money, when they can afford it. Someone that will find a way to spend money on something I like. And I am a new player brought here by an advertisement. And over time I will continue to spend money as I can afford.
Let none of us forget, that whatever we wanted out of the game, the company, in the end, wants to make money.
To that end, they will do their best to keep their Community happy when they can, but they have to look at what sells, and market and deliver that.
PGI has spent lots of money on advertising this game. I see the adds all the time on sites that require a company to pay for the add time.
I do agree with all the posts that some/most/all the prices are high, but that can only be fixed with more players buying more stuff to increase their profits and allowing them to give a price break on product.
The latest add I saw compared MWO to another game similar to it, but with respawn. I guaranty that the other game is making money. Can not remember the name of it, but I know it is. Because there are a lot of players that like shooters with respawn.
MechWarrior is not a respawn game, never has been.
I hate the price scale as its stands, because I have a large family, and it means I can not buy as much as I would like.
But for it to drop, means a lot of new players that will spend money need to join the game. Or, the seasoned players need to start spending money again/keep spending money.
That is the way it is. Whether we like it or not.
The bottom line for PGI is The Bottom Line. Profit.
The technical issues of programing, hosting, supporting, providing a forum for community, monitoring, administrating, and trouble fixing all cost money.
NOT TO MENTION THAT THIS IS NOT THE ONLY GAME PGI HAS, AND IS NOT THE BEST MONEY MAKER FOR THEM.
I love Battletech, and therefore MechWarrior, so I will end up spending money on it.
I would like for our voice as a community to matter to PGI, as the pugers, non-forum using groupers have no say.
First, we have to understand the economics of the situation, and the fact that within the grand scale of Mech/Robot games, MechWarrior fill a specific notch, but it is no longer the most popular one. Therefore, it does not make the money or attract the audience it used to. Afterall, the popularity of MechWarrior dropped enough during the cartoon show, that both it, and the movie that was in planning were dropped. Not enough money in it to make it sustainable at the time.
The fact that PGI was even willing to pay people to create it in the first place, without out guaranty of success or profit, shows tremendous faith in the hardcore Battletech/MechWarrior fans. Even more so, they created it with a play for free feature, hoping people would pay for other things in game.
Most games that only make money form item malls (as they are called) have huge fan bases and lots of players. When the profits drop enough over time, they are dropped unless some large mmorpg company wants to pick it up as the bill fodder.
Just look at the original Mech Commander game. Buy it, has online ability. Has no host servers for it now that belong to any company. There are a few independent people that retain some host serving for it, but other than that . . .
That will be the fate of this game eventually, I just hope that a new Battletech/MechWarrior game comes out to replace it by then. It was a long time from MW4 to MWO Clossed Beta. Comparitively speaking in gaming terms.
If we want PGI to keep spending time and money on our game, we need to help bring new players in, and make the game very profitable for them. That is the first agreement we need to have.
Every time PGI tries to do something, not just the "Black Sheep" bicker, but eventually almost all of the most common posters gripe/complain/claim money grab. Eventually, the Devs will get tired of working on a product that you claim no one wants.
And with it not making the money it should be making, PGI will cut the game altogether. So unless you have the money and equipment and ability to personally keep the game going going, JUST STOP.
If you really hate the game so much, go elsewhere. There are over 1000 games similar to this one out there. Go darken their doorway. Let us that love the game just because help others to love it also. Let us have a good community.
If all you want is just a free game, we have it for now. It may not be perfect. And it definitely needs work, but it is free.
BUT PGI STILL HAS TO PAY THE BILLS FOR THE FREE GAME WE ENJOY!! SO OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO CHARGE US FOR CERTAIN THINGS!!
For those of you that will, look up PGI, Its growth last quarter, its public record on this game (which includes some interesting facts), and then, if you still think that PGI should not charge us, explain politely why not. Blunt is fine, Blunt Honesty (even in opinion) should and will be respected. Griping, venting, &!+(#!^@ (starts with a "B", ends with "ing") will be ignored.
And we still have a Free Version!!

So? whats your point? Just because the forums constitute a vocal minority doesnt mean the majority doesnt agree with them.
You know how TV ratings work? They take a statistical sampling of a small group of people and then extrapolate the results from that sample. TV ratings work because the minority is representitive of the whole.
To be fair, we're not a statistically random sample of players.

Right?
If after the first 11 episodes (because Fox never aired the last 2, and showed the 2 episode pilot out of order) you don't realize that canceling Firefly is the biggest crime Fox perpetuated on mankind (with the exception of American Idol) then you have no soul.

One last run.
Not about sales or compromise. Not about minority/majority.
There are enough discussions about that, and a very good one that has been posted before, that I do not feel that it is important to drag that back up. The forum search will easily bring up these discussions, and the start of them is very good.
No, this last run has to do more with the in-game respect of venerated players. While most do show respect to each other, there are some that do not. I am not talking about the die-hard, this is MechWarrior so we love it till a better system comes out, know the history and the BU well players.
There are those that have joined houses and groups that are very skilled at the game and have no idea what the Battletech Universe is about.
I know this for a fact as one of the best players I have seen play is a part of the group I joined, and he know very little about the BU. This is by no mean disrespecting him, or other players.
Notice the words "that I have seen play" is the sentence above. Being part of my group, when I inevitably die before they do, I will spectate him if he is in the group. It is amazing to watch.
I mentioned something about the BU in TS, and he had no clue. Some of the other guys that were on at the time knew some, but as a Battletech lifer myself . . .
He is generally respectful to most everyone that plays, even on the text chat the game provides.
There are some amazing players out there that do not care to show any respect to anybody other than to members of their own group. And even then, they will sometimes rant stupidly if they loose.
Being a military man, the language does not bother me per say. By the same token, I do understand that you only have to be 13 to get into the game. And that there are laws against vulgarity in the US being blatantly said to MINORS.
I am not just talking about swearing - or cursing. Some one actually called another player and f***** P#$$% in the game.
Now, let us think about this for a minute.
If the offending player is from the US and is an adult ( 18+ years ), and the player vulgarized is a minor ( 17- years ) and from the US; then that players can have legal charges pressed against them, and PGI could be liable as well.
I can not speak for the laws of other countries on this matter, but for all the US players, this is something to seriously think about before you start ranting with colorful explicatives.
The other major downfall to this kind of behavior is that it can and does drive people away from the game.
NOT EVERYONE, AND NOT NECISARILY ALL THE TIME.
But it does cause some to go elsewhere, especially since any good player should know that it takes time to get that way.
This is a major problem for those that love the game. And even for those that have their complaints, this is very bad.
If the number of players drops low enough, PGI will end up moving on to a different game. And it may be awhile till another MechWarrior or Battletech game is made.
The new devs have a lot of work cut out for them, trying to fix the mistakes of the old ones, and bring in the things that were told were going to come out.
The last thing we, as a community, need to do; is to drive off players by doing this and/or allowing it.
People calling other players idiots, worthless, etc. are just as liable as well.
We all get bad groups sometimes.
As far as I can tell, only so 2-4 groups can be in a drop. The rest of the players are "pugers". Sometimes the Pugers either don't like certain people, don't listen, just don't anything of any value.
It happens even at the highest levels of play.
So bashing them for their bad play doesn't get anyone anywhere.
Being still new to most of the long timers, I am not the best in game. I have improved greatly since joining the Lone Wolfs, but still need time and practice.
In the ELO (however that is figured out as I know it is not as simple as the stated calculations) that I am currently at, I am okay and rising.
In a match where half way thru, I had to get off game and take care of my suddenly sick family, I was named and shamed by two or three players. I was playing with my group, so the group ELO was much higher than what I normally play at.
None of the people doing the shaming had better stats than I did for that match. And my mech sat there for about six minutes of the match!
Now none of these people were in the group of the best of the players, but no one said anything to them but my group mates. And they did so without resorting to the same tactics.
Technically, if it had made me but sore, I could have reported it. Being a clear violation of both the language rule and the name and shame rules listed in the Code of Conduct for the in game client, these players would have been banned.
I personally just laughed, but did respond that the stats would tell the tale. Risky for me in that game, but whatever. After sitting for about six minutes and still get 2 kills, 4 assists, and a little under 300 damage, that said enough.
There were members of a major faction within the forums and the game on the enemy side, and they said nothing.
NOTHING!
I would think that if the people of this community truly wanted a good and thriving community that brings in players and can help the game to get better, that they would at least strive to curtail blatant violations of the Code of Conduct like community members of other two games I play sometimes.
I do not know. Maybe I just remember the community that existed when Mech Commander 2 and MechWarrior 3 were big on the scene too well.
While I very rarely played the online (forgive the term) 'add-ons', when I did, the community was a good one.
That is what I would like to see again. Not just in the forums, but in the game as well.
And, as a last statement to the fact of the validity of the community of a game. Look at the epic run of Diablo II. The very large community of that game kept people in and strive to get new players to join. They would also help monitor other players on blatant violations so that the company would not have to. And it still has a dedicated server! And community!
P.S. - I did not mean to knock Firefly in my previous post. It seems some thought so. For that miss understanding I am sorry. It was not my intent. I personally have never seen the show, so, no opinion either way on it.
