I use it to see what my paint jobs look like to others, as the ambient light in matches rarely matches that of the Mech Lab.

Other than that, it doesn't get used.

To look at my super cool mechs at the beginning of a match. Sometimes I actually do it to see how my camo looks on the map terrain and lighting. I've recently started to embrace more realistic camos as they really do help your survivability compared to being a big neon 'kill-me' sign.

I've seen it used so little that I feel a little goofy for objecting so vehemently back when it was announced.

Effectiveness or lack of it aside, when I am spectating in 3rd person, it feels so unrealistic, I get a bit motion sick and stop viewing. Now when I tried it no problem'o. Holding the steering wheel does make a difference.

I wish you could shoot the camera, but, team mates would shoot them too. Wonder if they could be a module like a uav? To late for that.

Now I might use it for the rocks, never thought of that. Ty

I only use 3PV occasionally and briefly at the start of the match to check out a new paint job that I haven't tested on the current map yet.

Otherwise I never touch it.

I don't...w/exception to the rare occasion that I wish to see the backend of my mecha.

I love the idea that I'm causing the hardcore BT fans to die a little inside whenever I use it. Such power.

No power in exposing your noobishness to all in the game to see. And I strongly doubt your causing anyone to 'die inside' by doing so. Bad troll is bad.

Like most others, I use 3PV only to admire my own butt.

I've heard people say it helps with certain things. Screen shake from weapon impacts, focusing lasers on light mechs, discerning where you're getting shot from...

Still not worth giving up minimap and arm movement.

Well, back when Gauss was pretty instant click I would run around in 3rd person in my CTF 4X dual gauss beast, so I could leg lights easier. Everyone says it doesn't auto aim but I've legged my share of lights in 3pv so I don't know if I buy that.

Sometimes I like harassing in light mechs with flamers so it works pretty good for me because I'm not blinded by my own flamer.

But honestly I haven;t used 3pv for a long time now.

I use 3PV to climb hills better or to check out my mechs camo. That is all I use it for.

At the start of the match to look at my new camo, if I have apply a new coat.
When climbing up a cliff to get a better view of the ground.

Sometime in a brawl.
When caught in a brawl with multiple enemy, switching to 3PV give me a better view of all the enemy around me.
So I can twist and turn to delay my inevitable death as long as possible. :(

I've used it extensively in the training grounds to admire my camo and color choices. In game almost never, apart from checking if my missile doors are open.

However, I have noticed that the reticule snaps to enemy mech body locations when tracking slowly enough. I am also seeing several light pilots keeping 3PV on during the match.

Check out camo.

You know, you might be able to use it to dodge fire from the rear if you're running away in a super fast light. Going to test this out tonight.

I have used 3PV to snap screenshots free of cockpit view. Once the fog, er, glass toggle comes on the 29th, I'll never use it.

The main arguments you can use against 3PV, as far as combat goes, is that the minimap is missing which is a huge tactical disadvantage, and that your aiming isn't nearly as good as in 1PV. But if you can't convince them with that info they are a lost cause (or somehow are new to the concept of moving in one direction while looking in another)

The best use of 3pv is when you're trying to use a locust. It is about the only time I use it too. Compare screen shots of the cockpit view in 1pv of the locust to any other mech to see why it's just better to use 3pv when attempting to use that mech. The only other reason I can find to use 3pv is when the game glitches out and you loose your hud or map so you can spot what mechs are around you.

I only 3pv in my light mech to peak over hills, around buildings n for JJ'ing so I don't break my wee-little legs lol ... but mostly when im just running around in my light.. 1pv when in combat...

IMHO... Light Mech + Joystick + 3pv = total awesomeness when running around..

but yes.. I agree.. 1pv is much better for combat.. but as a light mech, 3pv in combat is very doable if u don't mind being very noticeable wit the drone hanging above ur head, also if ur running in a light wolf-pack, you can get away with 3pv... anything bigger and 1pv is much better for it.

i suspect that for some people it is a matter of comfort.. in MW2 and MW3, third person view was actually easier to use than the 1st person cockpit view. in the mechassualt games 3rd person view was the only option. and a lot of the other mecha focused games that aren't battletech based don't really have 1st person view.

if you've played a lot of those other games, you'd feel more comfortable using 3rd person view.

I had three games last night with three different users who were in an Atlas using 3PV throughout the entire match, even combat. Near the beginning of each match I told them to hit f4 to toggle the view and I suggested they use the FPV for combat. None of them took my suggestions and remained in 3PV the entire time. Normally I attribute this to noobs not knowing much about the game, but one of these pilots was a Founder in his Founder's Atlas. He later got huffy because I suggested he could do better in FPV, but never elaborated as to why.

So, I've created this topic to help me understand this perspective. I genuinely want to know if there's 3PV users out there who also post on this forum. If so, why do you use 3PV? I'm not talking about scouting or breifly turning it on for a peak over a hill. I'm talking about all the time, shooting pew pew and dakka, in 3PV. Why do you find it preferable to FPV?

To non-3PV users; PLEASE don't be jerkfaces to 3PV users. I'm asking them to be honest and explain something to me so I can understand their reason for using it. Bashing them or trolling them won't help get real answers. So please, keep it civilized, alright?

My question to you is why you felt the need to voice your opinion to these 3pv pilots that there was a better view for them to use? It is your opinion that 1pv is better, and that's it - your opinion. The most popular and occupied servers in MW4:Mercs were 3rd Person view and many of us coming from that game are used to playing in 3rd Person.
