That or they should just count as dead and be done with it, but my first idea is definitely better.
If they allow re connection... which I'm not holding my breath or anything, then simply have them count as dead while the player is not actively connected.

Sounds like a cool idea but I'd be worried about people dropping in AC20/laser boats and DCing just to troll the other team with an OP turret.
Can't be impossible to auto air-strike a mech that's been unresponsive for 1min at a base or some similar action..ideal being allowing a reconnect within the pre-airstrike timeframe.

Well. They'll have to figure out how to "protect" the disconnected mech until the player can reconnect. Otherwise, he'll reconnect to a mech with no arms, one leg, and most armor missing.

I don't think that would be necessary, most likely a reconnect would be within the next minute or two, most likely not long enough to have been limbed already (except on small maps perhaps). But at least they would have a chance to help the team rather than nothing at all.

Yeah, but they've been wanting to get that feature in since closed beta; I'm not optimistic that it's going to happen any time soon. Right now I'd just be willing to settle for treating disconnects as dead players, so we don't have to wait ten minutes more for the other team to find them and win.

Honestly I like this idea, but the player who gains control should only get points from his own efforts. They get the 'mech in the exact same condition it was left, no bonuses, temporary immunity of any kind, etc. (covering the bases here)
If they don't have the same model 'mech in their stable the xp should get converted to gxp in some way to make it a bit fair. Players who get "transfered" into a new 'mech may get a Y/N option to accept or just spectate or exit the game. Also they can only hop into only 1 mech per match, not 2 or more.

This way discos will die in a fire as they rightly should.
Edit:
The pilot name should be "The Reaper" and it should play a music riff from Rob Zombie's Meet the Reaper, Metallica's For Whom the Bell Tolls, or some other reaper/death themed song on kill. Perhaps "Disco Inferno" would be a good choice too, maybe we could have vote.
