I've spent money, and I'm still bad.

So, there's that then.

Just started game, was wondering if I could play competatively without ever spending real money on the game?

Also when will I be able to buy new mechs? other then the trials?

with only 4 mech bays, i dont think so.

Real money only reduces the amount of time you have to grind in order to get the variants needed for elite and then mastery.

And why not? You only need one mech. When you have 3, you can get the elite skills, and then master, and none of that requires any money.

You will WANT to get more mech bays, and maybe the hero mechs, and colors and camo patterns. But bottom line is - you can easily compete without ever spending money - playing well never costs anything, you'll just be playing the same mech every game.

Yes you only need one, but the competative team your are playing with might need more. 3/3/3/3 is coming too, wich increases its importance. Everyone cant be CTF-3D

Since you generally only need 3 mechs to get a mastery and you can sell the variants you don't want once the mastery level is unlocked, it is possible for the free player to specialize in 2 mechs in 2 different weight classes without being wasteful. The heavy slots too full for your CTF-3D? Then bring out the SHD-2H, SDR-5D, or HGN-733C. A free-only player can master a mech in two weight classes almost as easily as a paid player. Also, because mech XP unlocks stay unlocked even when the mech is sold, it is possible for a free play to have a representative mech in all four weight classes by working on one weight class at a time and buying back the mastered mechs once all four have been mastered.

Honestly, most people would prefer to keep their mastered mechs around instead of selling them to buy them back later. So the minimum $6.95 purchase can make things much easier by letting you buy 4 more mechbays with 50 MC in change. But it's not strictly necessary to do so.

If you find the game so much fun that you join a competitive team, chances are you will be willing to spend a couple of bucks on mechbays. For everyone else, the 4 free mechbays are enough to master 2 chassis pretty easily, including deadly meta rigs. That is a lot of value for $0.

To add to this (I hope)
You actually only need one mechbay to master a chassis - takes a lot longer - but you can unlock everything for 3+variants with one mechbay.

4 Mechbays gives you one for each weight class.
Hardly ideal, but quite possible.

I don't know what everyone is saying here.

Yes you must spend money, real dollars to be good and win in this game!!!

You must own a Muromet. For that you need cash!

Ok, jk. Everyone is right. Troll alert. When I started, I was not forum initiated. I did not know what a troll was.

Anyway, buy mech bays, less than a buck a piece. I have bought what, 40 in 2 years? Cheap fun. Don't sell mechs much myself. Kick my self, while also being proud I did not buy the Boars Head at 50% off. Good plodder/idiot plodder!

Get in on teamspeak, either on the sites server, or NGNG, no guts no galaxy. Or a private server, like ours.
Grettins, and have fun o7

In this economy without premium time it will take forever for you to grind enough cbills for three mechs fully loaded out and don't talk about modules or consumables.

Some of the Hero mechs are very much worth the cost. Ilya Muromets, Ember, Misery, Jester. Yen Lo Wang is not bad, either. While these chassis are not necessary, I appreciate the added c-bill bonus while playing these mechs. My advice is to wait until the chassis go on sale, though.

MWO is one of the few games that you can be competititve without spending any real money (maybe a few money for mechbays perhaps?). Time to achieve a competititve level varies, depending on play time, luck, skill, etc, but in the end of the day, yes you can be competitive. MWO has an excellent feature: afetr a certain point a mech is topped regarding gear and mech skills. There is nothing more that money (game or real) can buy for a certain mech. Beyond that point the game is all about skill and teamwork.

I meant 2 chassis. No or almost no sell/buy cycles make it easy to master two mechs. To level more, the time needed rises considerably because of multiple sell/buy cycles.

I personally played somewhat well completely free, maintained a steady climb in kd-ratio,wl-ratio and mastered couple of my favourite chassis.
Best thing about this game is that it is really hard, you can enjoy it and be successful for free and the community is rather nice.

The most worthwhile thing to spend cash on is mech bays, maybe conversion of experience points for using on other mechs and pilot skills.

If you like multiple mech types, mastering them is a pain with only four mech bays. You need to spend skill points in three variants to get to the higher tiers. One route is to sell off one variant once you've skilled it up to make room for more. However I personally get attached to them after I put the time in them. :-)

This stuff has probably already been stated (couldn't be bothered reading 3 pages of discussion sorry):

In MWO, you can play well for free. Yes it will take you ages to grind C-Bills, XP and it will take a while to unlock better upgrades on your mech (eg. Double Heat Sinks) but by the time you've managed to save up for all these things, you should be comfortable in your mech and doing well. You only get 4 free mech bays though so best pick your starting mechs wisely. You have to figure out what you are good at doing on the battlefield (camping doesn't count sry pplz) and maximise your strengths.

Good video from Koreanese - the only way you can get good is from getting immersed in the world of Mechwarrior Online AND playing all kinds of different mechs (try the trial mechs)
