The main issue with reconciling the action oriented FPS version and the TT/CBT version IS the random die rolls. The reason legging became so prevalent in the MW series is because there was no system in place to mimic the hit location randomness.

I fired four medium lasers annnnnnnnd ...

One hit you in the Center Torso
One hit you in the Right Arm
One hit you in the Left Leg.
One missed completely.

I would actually approve of a system that added a bit more randomness to the fire control system, whether through a cone model, actual BT style die rolling, or ... whatever. I don't believe that skilled players should be completely gimped or that people who can't aim should have a 50/50 chance of winning vs a skilled player, but to give the BT 'feel' I think it's appropriate to add SOME mechanism to capture the random hit location behavior to some degree.

download the free Megamek software and try it out against a computer opponent. Its how I stay sane after trying to get my friends to like Battletech failed ;).
