I can see clearly now the grain has gone
I can see all of the depths in the field
Gone is the dark dirt and all the cracks
It's going to be the right, right, right, right, type of gameplay.

lol

Great that you can now turn off film grain and window cracks and depth of field.

The problem with these effects was:

1. Film grain, from what camera?
2. Window dirt and cracks, your eyes would see past it and one eye would see through it making it very out of focus and more transparent.
3. Depth of field, is centred where your eyes are looking and without eye tracking etc. it can't really be realistic.

So it's good you can turn them off.

They were good ideas in a way, but they can't be implemented realistically without all sorts of VR hardware.

Now if there was only a way to sell the useless monitors from all my mechs in the mechlab for some extra cbills. ^_^

cockpit glass would be fine... if it worked like MW3... as I talk about in this other thread.

You know what actually makes me the saddest of all in regards to this stuff..

The cockpit glass stuff doesn't bother me that much, save for what PGI did in regards to it.

When people were saying "We want cockpit glass effects." we wern't talking about what PGI gave us... we were talking about how cockpits were handled ALA Mechwarrior 3.

We wanted cracks to appear like this when you took hits to the cockpit. It would be a great addition. Let it smear with light black when machine guns hit, and crack and the like when lasers/ppc/ballistics hit.

Instead... we get this half-arsed "here's some glass that kinda shows up in the right lighting."

They totally screwed the pooch on this one.

Only if they are out of focus and more transparent, to simulate how your eyes focus past them, otherwise it just seems unrealistic and in the way. When playing it's as if you want to focus past them but they just won't go out of focus because it's all on the 2d plane of the monitor.

Maybe if PGI would supply all players with a second see through monitor that goes in between you and the PC monitor and renders the cracks and dirt lol then it could be realistic.

Sorry OP, your cockpit glass argument is rather silly. While it's not as good as it could be (the glass, that is), it's better than no glass. No, it does not effect your sniping. Don't complain. ^_^

One could say the noise effect is there because you're looking through a neurohelmet... but I'll probably run it off anyway. Good we got the options finally.

I turned all 3 off at first but turned back on just the cockpit glass to at least have that feeling I was in a cockpit.

Probably going to do this. Had all three off last night, which was great for closed beta nostalgia. Feels like a bit of an fps bump, but didn't really look.

Glass isn't that bad, with some tuning and live effects, cracks, etc it could be pretty sweet.

Grain had no business in there, nor artificial DoF. My opinion, but they diminished the over all look and feel.

Hope they make these options, or even better - take a look at feedback and usage, turn off grain and field by default (players can turn them on), and release an improved cockpit glass when time permits.

The DOF and Grain were unrealistic... but didn't really bother me too much. The one that bothered me was the glass, it was causing me a lot of eyestrain (I have really bad eyes) so I'm glad I can turn it off.

can someone provide images to compare the two? I've never noticed a film grain effect.

I'm with you. I turned it off this morning and still couldn't see the difference.

The left-hand part of the image has film grain removed, the right hand side has film grain.

The most obvious section to see the difference most clearly is on the division in the middle, looking at the sky. The sky on the left is clear, while the sky on the right looks kind of "dirty", lacking a better word.

It's a fairly subtle effect, but has an overall negative impact on the visuals by making everything kind of grainy and blurry. It also ends up contributing to eye strain, because like the DoF effects, it creates something that your eyes think are just a result of being out of focus... so your eyes try to focus the image, but they can't... so it just tires them out.

Or even in MW4. Get shot in the cockpit.... I want to see some cracks and scoring, maybe some HUD flickers (ie mw4). Besides that, glass should be transparent.

I deactivated them all... to get more FPS.

I don't regret it. I think it had a measurable impact on my end.

Off to enjoy the game I go~

Only good (free) thing about the patch was getting better graphics. For me, the cockpit "glass" effect was just another thing that ruined the feel of the game - something static and unrealistic. Kinda like the "rocks" that will stop an assault mech dead, or the invincible statues in River City.

Look, if you want to mess around with the cockpit glass, make sure it is in response to something that happens during the match. Taking a shot to the cockpit and losing 30% armors and seeing cracks? Cool! Having someone fire missiles or a flamer and leaving scorch marks - cool cool! Actually having the cockpit glass break away when you have lost all the armor and taken internal damage? COOL-COOL-COOL!

Weird splotches on the glass for no reason? Sad. Like indestructible pebbles.

Why isn't stained/damaged glass realistic, though? One could argue that it's more realistic than not being there. You're not piloting a shiny new BattleMech, you're piloting a old, battle worn 'Mech in an era of chaos. Modern tanks, for example, once being on campaign for some time, or any military vehicles for that matter, don't tend to stay clean.

The only reason I turned it all off. Is that it puts me at a severe disadvantage to players who have it off. Frankly I thought it was the best way to level the playing field against PPC/AC meta and give brawlers some semblance of a chance. But oh well.

Turned it off because other players have it off. They can see further, more clearly, why shouldn't I be able to?
