The in-game chat has been kind poorly handled for a while now. Even something as simple as scroll-able chat would be a big improvement, if people are chatting so fast they effectively can chat over each other. Hell a jerk on the other team could spam, another reason for scrolling text and a compelling reason to add filter options.
I understand that VOIP is a bigger deal that will take time, but touching up the text based chat seems like a reasonable request. I don't understand why it hasn't been done.
A great middle ground would be a Tribes-like VGS system, even with VOIP, the system worked great for fast on point messages. You could even sell voice packs like they did if you made it audible VGS.

Plus the ability to add friends from the match you just played easily would be awesome and add to the social feel of the game.

it would be really handy at least if they would add some Shortcut Options like
Need help at <grid position of my mech>
or
Attack <grid position of my target>
in running matches if I get under attack its almost impossible for me to activate the chat and type in "help me at D5" - in most cases I die alone - directly next to my teammates that just look in the wrong direction and will die seconds later.

Even some simple attack routes for pug matches would be nice. I defiantly like the idea of shortcut call outs.
When groups are under ECM a fast call out for help would be really helpful.
