I think pay per use is a double cost to premium players. We already pay to support the game, I don't think per use payments on top of that is a reasonable option. I certainly will not pay for "private" matches at that point.
Now a split option....that makes monetary sense to me and doesn't feel like a gouging.
If you have premium time, private matches are an option.
If you do not have premium time, MC per private match also becomes an option. Something akin to 15-50 MC per match perhaps (leaning towards 15 if one person per side has to pay the fee). Much more than that though seems unfair to me, given the amount of time played per match.

Sean, a server running a game for 2 players still consumes a large amount of resources. Less overall than for 24 people, naturally, but still much more per person.
Is it really wrong for them to want to get back something for that by requiring premium for the players involved?

The simple answer is let one of the players host the game, there is no rewards so there should be no reason that the match couldn't be like the training grounds and hosted by one of the users involved.

I'd gladly make a reasonable trade for a private match. How about using one day of premium time so that I can play private 1vs1 matches for that whole day?
Use the 1 day Premium time option then, it's 250 MC so between $1.39 and $1.00 depending on how you buy your MC.

They're going to implement pay per use at some point.
Really? Only one game has tried that and it was APB, which didn't end very well...

huh, I asked a dev specifically about that yest and he said he knew nothing about it and didn't see it ever happening. I am not saying it will never happen, but I am just saying that is what I was told.

Yeah it's discussed here:

Special Note:The use of Premium Time to get access to the more advanced options is currently a temporary implementation. The plan is to eventually move to a pay-per-use model which will fit much better into both the player experience and business model requirements.
