How about introducing an intermediate step to 3/3/3/3. I'm suggesting limiting the Assault mechs per match to 3, but not limiting other weight classes.
The difficulty of filling 4 independent "buckets" per match is probably much more difficult for the matchmaker to do than filling 2.
For example, with 3/3/3/3, if no one plays lights, then the match won't start. With N/N/N/3, the match would still start even if there are no lights. The extra spots would get taken up by mediums and heavies.
If this works, then it's easier to take the next incremental step of moving to N/N/3/3, or N/N/5/3, or whatever makes sense. For that matter, maybe N/N/N/3 would be sufficient to achieve better balance until something else is in place.
A phased approach such as this might be simpler and easier to adapt to, and would also give the community some practice at not just piloting assaults all the time.

N/n/n/3 As A Starting Point Instead Of 3/3/3/3

I support this 100%. This is what it should have been in the first place. Either that or 3/N/N/3 (3 lights and 3 assaults). Mediums and heavies are too similar to be limited. Too bad PGI doesn't have the sense to adopt this idea.

I very much support this idea and you may look at it as a stepping stone, since actual 3/3/3/3 doesn't really work anyways. Try this out and maybe you won't have to go the whole way to 3*4.

i just say don't make 3/3/3/3 absolute...
if you can't fill 3/3/3/3 fill it the quickest way it can be if 4/4/2/2/ 2/2/4/4 whatever.

How about encouraging people to use light and medium mechs instead of forcing them to use one or face long wait times?
Why do people PUG? To earn C-Bills and XP.
Just apply a "light mech bonus" and "medium mech bonus" to all the earnings. Simple as that.
Wait a week. Check mech class statistics. Adjust the bonus as needed.

Why not just use a battle value system..... Tonnage doesn't matter. Some assaults will do as much damage as some mediums and vice versa. Just because they aren't optimal builds.

I summarily reject this idea and any idea that limits mechs in a match by weight class.
