I took a six months long break from MWO recently after having played quite a lot of it and because I had the feeling PGI wasn't delivering on its promises. I tried it again now since some of their news e-mails looked interesting (private matches, new Mechs). I have spent quite a bit of money on MWO too, so in the hope that some things can still change to the better and that this is not an endless moneygrab, I wanted to write down my thoughts on the current iteration of the game:
Pros
- MechWarrior license (obviously)
- Mechs are cool (obviously, no need to state this...)
- Weapon sounds are great on my 5.1 speakers, very atmospheric
- Cool music (there should be an option to have it during the whole match even)
- Combat can be tactical and thrilling
- HPG Manifold - love the muffled vacuum sounds
- Mechs look cool in UI 2.0
- Achievements with C-Bill rewards
- Can sell equipment from one screen now
- Warning in Mechlab for missing ammo
- Turrets in bases
Store is confusing (see next items):
- Clicking an advertisement on the store front page opens your web browser instead of showing them in the store
- No info on Mechs in the store before buying them (need to go to Mechlab for that, huge oversight IMO)
- No filters for sorting in the store
- Mechlab still requires you to click a lot if you want to change your loadout (I like the Mech Details screen though)
- No info on number of free slots
- No list of amount of ammo loaded
- Weapon info doesn't show exact range
- No "Find Modules" feature yet (only if not equipped I think?)
- It feels hard to find a specific Mech too, the filters and sorting system doesn't seem "to be there" yet
- Interface generally too slow, lots of loading screens before and after matches, this gets annoying quickly
- The amount of lists in UI 2.0 (Mechs, consumables etc.) is hard on the eye and needs getting used to - too many graphics look the same and many elements and fonts have the same size
- Scroll speed is too slow (for me at least)
- I didn't realize I still had Premium Time available until I clicked the Activate button out of curiosity
- Current Selected Mech window should have a Configure button as well
- Other games get the sense of scale much better, I think MWO is missing vehicles and humans in the maps, IMO this should be high priority for a game like this
- Graphics tend to lag sometimes, even though I think my system is decent (i5 3570k, GTX 770, 8 gigs of RAM)
- Still no Community Warfare!
