Actually, we now have the ability to turn it off via user configuration settings. Basically, you need to create a .cfg file with the following text in it:

gp_option_ShowCockpitGlass=0

Name this file user.cfg and put it in your MWO main folder. Some other settings you might want for clearing your view are:

r_HDRGrainAmount=0.0
r_DepthOfField=0

When the player base said we wanted cockpit glass effects, we were referring to MW3 style cockpit damage like cracks , burns and bullet holes.

Not dirty ass glass and glare.

Seriously, wtf PGI...

You have the ability to turn it off now (scroll up to the first reply in this thread).

I wasn't on of those people... but I do agree with them. THAT would be cool.

Well, my guess is probably that there were maybe like 3-5 people crying out for "immersion" (ambiguous term) features, one of which being cockpit glass. PGI took it to the extreme. It's something I'm not exactly a fan of, but at least they did let us not deal with it if we don't want the "immersion" (aka vision obstruction).

You should also get sucked out of your cockpit if your glass gets cracked on HPG and then trampled to death by your own mech.

Actually the glass looks pretty good now. The problem is youre at a disadvantage by not turning it off because it DOES impair vision. Having an option to turn it off is fine *for now*, but if they eventually add cracks/bulletholes/burnmarks to the glass, they need to FORCE everyone to have cockpit glass turned on. Because having a damaged cockpit and impaired visibility should be part of the simulation.

I like the glass but we should have had the ability to turn it off from the beginning. Also the glare effect is backwards. It is hardest to see out of it when you face away from the light source.

I really like the cockpit "glass" effect (it's not glass, so don't expect it to look like proper glass; it's transparent armor panelling, or else a single headshot would kill you every time).

That said, you can turn it off now. They even included the instructions in the patch notes, and there was a thread somewhere around here with further advice about how to do it (and it included FoV, DoF, and Film Grain info).

I tried this and it didn't work. I guess mine is still locked.

Did you make sure that it's not user.cfg.txt or something? It must have the right extension or it won't work.

You won't have one to begin with, so you must create one. Make a .txt file, and then manually change the extension to .cfg (note, in Windows 7 you have to toggle it to show extensions). Make sure the name is correct, and that you created it in your main Mechwarrior Online folder. Double check the formatting, too. No spaces are allowed for Film Grain, DoF, and Cockpit Glass, and spaces are required for field of view modification.

Just a heads up; the effect is MUCH more noticeable when you have your FOV turned up. If you play with FOV up, then don't complain about the introduction of glass, because said glass wasn't designed with such a wide view in mind. Also, you can switch it off.

People so often forget that 'adding' something to the game requires programming time. Probably more time than you realise. So don't act as if you don't understand why PGI won't add stuff like this when they're working on Clans and who knows else what.

i have all the special settings on default. Except 3pv that **** is off and will never get turned back on.

and i thought the changes worked but now looks like they didnt... unless that new manifold map has other effects not connected to glass
