It would help to show us your builds and what mechs you were trying. You probably know how to build, but the only way to figure out a problem is to review everything.
That said
YOU NEED BALLS! BIG BALLS!
To pilot a heavy you gotta be tactical and brave sometimes
Stick with your lance!
Remember to always Twist incoming damage.
When you have taken heavy damage in a truly critical area, you aren't obliged to keep being a front-liner. Hang back, away from enemy attention and use your weapons to support.
You're used to lights and a few Meds, so you're used to driving JEEPS!
But this is a TANK game!. In a heavy mech you are one big friggin tank. Soak that into your mentality.
STOP USING XL's! I have a feeling this might be a source of your problems. XLs on lights are almost standard practice. On heavies putting an XL in is a weighty decision not to be taken lightly. Now the Quickdraw, looks like it has nice torso hitboxes and I am unfamiliar with that chassis, so I cannot say for sure if XL is unwarranted in this case.

XL:s in fire support heavies (LRM-boats,Jagerbombs etc.) and fast skirmishers (Dragon,Quickdraw) are ok,quickie and dragon are quite XL-friendly.
Sure you can do Quickdraw a as a STD-engine brawler(the stock loadout on 5K is nice for this, just take 3 jj:s off, switch the the FF to Endo-steel and max the armor),but it will run hot, much hotter than with a XL360,and with a beefy XL,youll be gone and away before your target realizes even whats happening.106.9 kph is lot better than 89 kph imho in that mech.
