Any advice on how to come around a mountain or the corner of a building in a (mostly) safe manner? Many times I turn the corner of a building or come around the side of a hill and all of a sudden there are 1-5 enemy 'mechs. My sensors did not pick up ANY of them. Needless to say , my day was just ruined. So how can I go around "blind" areas in reasonable safety oor should I go around them with guns blasing? I am running a basic model Griffin (1N). What sensors can I put on it to aid in detecting "hidden mechs"? How do the advanced players handle corners and hillsides? THANKS!

A heap of tips....

1. Do not hug the mountain - give yourself some distance. Players tend to aim right for the nearest ridge, so if you are hugging the side they will have you targeted before you even reveal yourself
2. Look for alternatives - if the path is covered, then find alternatives, it could be as simple as going the other side e.g. mounds in Canyon
3. Use JJ - Do a peek and check your six before you advance
4. Use Seismic - Stop before you go round or over to check if there are any hostiles in close proximity
5. Team up with an ECM mech - so when you go around the mountain you do not get bombed by LRM's + The ECM mech can scout for you!
6. Torso twist - If you encounter fire, reverse and torso twist; do not run a 360 and reveal your back (I have seen mech's do this and get alpha killed - its a real waste...)
7. Always use caution - patience and situational awareness are vital skills to have in the game

But to answer your question in a nutshell - get seismic OR you can launch a UAV if you do not mind spending the C-Bills

Short answer: you don't. Good news, though, your enemies can't do it too.

In MWO your sensors only detect visible enemies withot ECM cover so,
apart from peeking out from an unexpected angle (jump-peeking) your best bet is either packing "Seismic sensor"
or being unpredictable.

P.S. ... of course you can also peek from a distance, wait till somebody else goes first or ask for intel. Anyway, the spots where people usually "blob up" are pretty much static. Learn them and avoid peeking there.

Be cautious. Use your head.

Where is the enemy? where were they last seen? how many enemies are left alive? If there have been zero confirmed sightings, think about places where they are likely to be. Where is your team looking? Is there someone covering the flanks and obvious paths?

The maps are not that big, so if the enemy is not at A then they are probably at B... If you can already see A and B, think about where else could they be?

If there is no clear answer to the above, assume the worst, and that the whole enemy force may be lurking arund that corner. Seismic sensor helps, but so too does going the long way around to get a look from a less obvious vantage, and simply being cautious. Peeking around the corner is safer than going full throttle, jump-jetting over a hill to get a quick peek is even safer, but if you can move from cover A to cover B, a full tilt run can be safe- you can get back into cover before they can lock you.

The real world response is to move forward from cover to cover and each unit that is not moving is providing cover fire but that needs coordination.

You can use one of the numpad keys to move at a low speed. That way you can look without being too exposed and quickly decelerate into reverse.

The first question you need to ask yourself is, "Do I really need to come out around that corner?" There are situations in which you have the enemy coming to you and it may be better to wait for a free shot.

Once you get past that, try to be unpredictable (coming out in 10s intervals in the same place gives the enemy easy shots), and prepare to GTFO/run ahead fast if need be. Everybody trying to "poke" in choke points is often suicidal as it invites strikes and focus fire. If you have JJs, you can do sideways passes in which you pop a few shots, and drop down often before getting fired at. When moving out of cover hard, it helps if you bring friends to tank damage and possibly dispatch enemies quickly. Even better if you can come around a different corner entirely -- that will really ruin someone's day.
