I plan to do a Cataphract for medium-close range and came up with such build:
CTF-3D
Dual AC5s for a bit of range with 2MPLs and 2 MLs for close fight. JJs give some mobility but I don't have experience with them: do I need all 4 of them?
Is this build viable?

looks good
though unless you plan to poptart i don't think 4 jumpjetts are going to be that usefull
2 would still be okay
more speed - 70 kph and .50 tonns more of leg armour with 1 more heatsink
but 1 jumpjet and no ams

Might I suggest this build: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...f30dc400337905e
- Large Laser for long range and the AC/20 can still do damage at medium range if you aim a little higher
- 2 JJ's and full armour (I clicked the full armour button so I didn't distribute the torsos properly)

The added heat & weight from the MPLs isn't really worth it, and then you'll have 3 different weapon systems on different recycle times and ranges.
I'd drop both of those to standard MLAS, pick up two tons.
Then you can drop 1 or even 2 JJs, without poptarting 4 is kind of overkill.
That's a total of 4 tons to play with.
You could dump all of that right into a beefier engine (280 or 285 STD) or you could spend a bit on swapping to UAC 5s instead of AC 5s.
Like this, for example: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...3da63f868751515
Which has a larger engine and an extra DHS for the cost of 2 JJs, some armor shaving and dropping to MLAS.
My reasoning is because as a heavy, going as slow as most assaults without their actual survivability is a bit of a waste.
Having more speed has almost always been a great tonnage investment on my Cataphracts (I run 300xl in both my 3D and IM).

i had good success with this build... (i'm not a pro, but for my level, i have pretty good luck with it)
STD 260
Ac-20, 4 tons
dual LL's or ERLL's
dual ML's
AMS+1 ton..
endo+double heat sinks
has some LR ability, and the JJ's get you to some decent spots for some sniping.. when things get closers, that AC-20 packs a punch, and swap to ML's so you don't over heat, or for finishing blows, or light leg sweeping
Has a second weapon group on the LL's, so you can chain fire when things get hot
