I've wondered...whe purchasing a new mech (and I believe in UI 2.0) you have the option to rename your mech, and can't help but thinking why don't more people do this?

if anything, it could cause a moments pause in the enemy if they look briefly at their hud and the target says "Huggin" but then an Atlas D-DC come around the corner.....

Psyops can be your friend

Note: I have not actually renamed any of my mechs...just wondering about it

The designations you see in matches are variant codes, not something you can change. The changed names are currently only visible to you in your mechlab.

Renaming mechs only changes the name in your mech lab, not on the battlefield.

Everyone does it, but only they can see it. I think there's a thread in the Barracks forum where ppl have shared their mech names. Mine are all named after japanese food ;)

oh...so its only in the mechlab....well, I can see how that would be useful...but damn..I was hoping for some sort of Psyop effect in game too

Now I'm disappointed ;)

Exactly what I'm talking about... the "OH S**T!!" factor of when you're expecting one thing and get another

Once targeting enemy mech I saw No Pilot where a name should be. Okay, I thought, maybe poor guy got disconnected. And then this mech started to move. Smart guy indeed ;)

I've been in a match with him before ...thought it was brilliant

I actually took advantage of this in that I use "M ready" or "E testfit" for "Mastered and combat ready", or "Elite and fitted with an untried armament".

Primarily, this helps me keep track of what mechs currently have engines in them, and it also makes it easy to pick a functional mech when I don't feel like continuing with the one I'm currently focusing on leveling up.

Since the mechlab doesn't give me all the valuable information without waiting for the tooltip or clicking through to "mech details", this is an easy way to get an overview right there in list mode.

Hey Bullet, good running with and against you last night..I was Osprey's wingman. Anyways, I use the name to help me when I am going down chosing my mech. Usually I have load out info in it so I can tell which Jag I want or Hunchie, so forth. Sometimes you don't want to look and see what you did, especially if I changed the load out from what I normally had....i.e. CDA-3M, can name LB10 vs LPL

Oh... so you were the one that killed me as I was lighting up Osprey ;)

Yeah, I get the remaning mechs in the mechlab to keep them ordered as to status/loadout, etc...I just want more psychological warfare in the game I guess....

I'd only bother with naming variants if we could save/restore them more easily. Like what I used to do in Mechwarrior 4, simple descriptive stuff like:

"2LL 4ML GR JJ ECM 78k"
"2PPC LRM40 JJ BAP 64k"

P.S. what is the character limit for MWO mech names? If its long enough I could still use that I guess to more easily tell what a mech has (instead of XXkph I could put STD300 or something to know engines since currently that takes forever to find or remember)

ShawkTrooper - nickname on my (P) Shadowhawk, wanted to use a space, but was one letter short.
So - 12.

That is clever - never thought about marking their XP levels that way (which since I am working on finishing masteries - that is BRILLIANT) :)

This is pretty awesome.
