So the PROTECTOR was the first Hero mech that I bought, and the first mech that I payed MC for. I've since found that I'm much more capable in 35-55 ton mechs so this old dad hasn't gotten much action lately.

Always on the lookout for useful ONI-P builds I decided to jump on the LRM bandwagon and see what I could come up with. (I don't even own anything else that could go LRM heavy so this was the best I could do.) I still kept the spirit of the Orion balanced loadout while giving him LRM25 capability with plenty of ammo and good short/long range backup weapons.

I normally don't ever run my BIG MAC with an XL engine but I just couldn't find a way to make him useful as LRM support without one. I ALWAYS DIE TO CT hits in this guy with his wide ass boxy torso, so hopefully this will work out ok in the long run. Also, armor placement is not optimized, season to taste.

-LRM-15,10: You get 57 volleys of LRM25 fire with this setup, seems like a bit much to me but then I remember that people are regularly burning through 2K rounds in matches right meow.

-AC-5: I went with reliability on this one. In my experience a single UAC-5 is too unreliable, and 3 tons of ammo makes for a good medium range support weapon with a little oomph.

-2x MPL: I went with the pulses to maximize short range firepower against pesky lights and pinpoint targeting at close range. 2 ML just doesn't scare anyone off and many would have trouble landing AC-5 shots against faster targets close range. If you feel the need though you could go ML to make room for more LRM ammo, Artemis, or AC-5 --> UAC-5 upgrade.

-TAG: Unless you are running in a dedicated group with a spotter can you really rely on anyone else to hold locks for you? Will likely come in handy when one of those gazillion DDC's being fielded rounds a corner 500m out on you.

-BAP: Will still help you land target locks when you can't keep your torso mounted TAG laser on moving targets.

-AMS: Well I don't really build anything without AMS so there ya go.

I'll be out there working the kinks and quirks out of this build tonight. If you have an ONI-P that you can't figure out how to use, try this out and let me know how it works!!!!

Don't know if you've tried it, but I like to use mine as a dedicated brawler. 2 med lasers, large pulse laser, ac 20, std 300 and as many heat sinks as I can cram in. Runs fairly cool (if I don't constantly fire off alpha's) and can pack some nasty pinpoint damage.

I would like to add that completing the elite skills to get speed tweak and also to double the basic skills makes a HUGE difference in how it performs.

I like it but, I only use bap for streaks. I find that my range and target decay module is more than enough for lrms. I'd probably drop bap and a half ton of ammo from the legs but, other than that it looks good. I never carry full leg armor in anything but lights. Of my 3 mastered Orions I think I only have around 50 leg armor and I don't remember getting legged or I would have added some back.
