A messload of AC/5s. Good turnover, decent damage, more ammo per ton, low heat.

The medium laser is the workhorse of the Inner Sphere for a good reason. Low heat for it's damage when you consider the fact that it is an energy weapon.
Cheap and extremely light weight for it's power. Commonly available.

Technically the best is probably ER Med Laser (Clan) but game changers are the Clan weapons in general so excluding all of that as they wont be in the game the ER PPC and PPC are to high on heat, Gauss has ammo issues, playing the actual game i often opted for a large rack of MGs but thats cause i often chose a Mace as well!
IMHO Med weapons either pulse of normal are good backed up with Streak SRMs, but the game only works with a mixture, if you dont have your LRM Support you may not get to use your Med weapons at all!
