Namely should I be reading Lethal Heritage and the bracketing books in the timeline to bone up on the politics?

From what has been said, yes they are going to follow canon BT events/story.

which will make it entertaining if they can conform some of the battles to actual cannon fights in a side story sort of envieomnet.

I don't think the game is going to worry too much about the politics of the Inner Sphere, but you might want to brush up on those novels if you want to RP (besides it was a pretty good series).
