sensor range is how far you can detect mechs when in line of sight, and you can lock on by pressing R..

Beagle increases that, advanced sensor range module increases it further.. You need to use GXP to unlock the module so you can use it, and that takes a while... But so worth it.. really a wonderful use of a module slot, and 1.5 tons on any mech.. plus it helps with spotting bonuses!
