Game play is seriously lacking due to...
With the randomized map selection it is pointless to have the ability to customize mechs in mech lab.
A chosen Mech load out will not work on all maps the same. Due to the variances in temperature, terrain, gravity, weather and lighting.
When a player enters a match it is a lottery that they will land on a map that will allow them to pilot their mech to its max potential or intended use.
In truth a MAP dictates a mechs load out and a players play style. If you are on a hot map you will obviously want to adjust your mechs heat sinks and weapons to increase sustained firepower and lower heat. If the map is wide open, one would possibly look to go for long range weaponry. If the given map had many ridgelines and valleys one would possibly like to mount jump jets.
If history has taught us anything. One who investigates or does reconnaissance on a proposed or known battlefield will make adjustments to ensure a more favorable outcome. Information/intelligence is key. Currently that ability or option is not a remote possibility. Right now all the mechs being used are what we call "general purpose". This is drastically hindering game play. Full potential has not been touched at this point.
I remember when I played the previous MechWarrior online where in a competition setting you would be informed on what planet/maps the forthcoming battles would take place. Once that information was presented, teams would then make their adjustments for it. Teams/units/clans would make specific, purpose built Mech configurations based on the map/terrain to be played on. These Mechs would be the pinnacle of efficiency, maneuverability and firepower. They were called Variants.
It is possible for MWO to provide this level of game play by introducing a map selection option and a variant saving option allowing players/pilots to run maps of their choosing and quickly selecting a variant to use on it.
There is also a serious lack of playable maps for the number of players currently in MWO. The current set of maps are by far old and limited. A few are too small for 12v12. Most battles are melees with no real strategy. More maps with larger battle areas would help significantly. This will increase the overall scope of the current game play and attract more tactical minded players in turn would attract organized game teams/units/clans.
I'll leave this here for anyone else to ponder or add to.
