I'm sold.

Granted they have the opportunity to cast them in the best possible light, but this looks like an awesome bit of giant-robot tactical fun.

For anyone also contemplating a $60 founders, I recommend checking out the Light - Assault videos, as they describe the role each Mech will play on the battlefield, allowing you to shape your choice to preferred playstyle, or just whatever interests you more.

After having watched them, do you think the medium class "Hunchback" would be a good choice for someone relatively new? (I've played MechWarrrior, but MANY years ago) That's my line of thinking so far, assuming they have the games and roles relatively balanced.

Hunch is my fav, followed by the Atlas as far as founder mechs go. Slow but can pack a punch and stand it's ground. My kinda mech.

The Hunchback is solid in Tabletop. A little slower, with a big gun, though it will have a nice bit of customizability. The Catapult(c1 variant) is a missile boat, but it's also a heavy with jumpjets, something the Atlas and Hunch both lack. For a beginner, I think either would do you well, as you can suit them to your playstyle after a little farm, though they are fairly restrictive in their weight classes if you go by "standard loadouts = standard hardpoints" but either could be rather beloved and balanced.

Hunch is a good all around mech for a starter player like yourself.

yep i think for a "rookie pilot" a hunchback is a good basis...you can do alot with it, and i think there are some decent varients of it too, so you should have alot of fun with it for starters...and maybe longer :P

i took the catapult, but just because i wanted it from the 1st day of announcement :(

I'd go with Hunchback for a starter player such as yourself, its a pretty solid mech with good variants, it'll see you just fine.

Definitely leaning towards the Hunchback then. Thanks for the constructive feedback!

I agree, for a new player the Hunchback in probably a good place to start. It can have enough armor to brawl a bit, it isn't terribly slow, it definitely has the firepower and can be armed in various ways that fit your interests.

I would ask you, what type of role do you think interests you the most? Jack of all trades, fast attacker, nimble scout, huge meatshield of death, flanker, straight up the middle....whats your play-style.. or what do you think it will be?

I took the atlas since:
1) it should be the most expensive to buy in game (most bang for my buck)
2) It's an atlas
3) For the other weight classes I think I would prefer the other mechs announced so far
4) Since its an Atlas I am expecting it will need more repairs/supply costs so the bonus C-bills will offset that...

Not for nothin I think if your gonna pick for a Mech for your founders money the Hunchy has the least to offer in so far as compared to other units that will be available at launch.

Jumping mechs are very limited which gives the Catapult nice value. Atlas is a monster and expensive to buy in game which also give it some nice value. I think you'll end up finding a unit youll like better than the hunchie down the line and itll just collect dust once you get into something a little more specialized but I think the Catapult and the Atlas will always have value. Scout mechs are cheap.

OP: If pc performance or lag are an issue, then I'd point you to the catapult. The main guns are guided weapons and do not appear to be influenced by lag or bad framerate. Otherwise, just get em all and you can play whatever you want when you want. Should you plan to stick around for at least a year, then it's one hell of a deal.

When I'm playing something new, I usually go with "Jack of all Trades," as it gives me a small taste of everything and I can mold future play around what I've learned.

I also enjoy filling missing roles - I think it's more rewarding in a team-based game to be prepared to fill the role everyone else is avoiding, which in essence makes your contribution a huge part of the victory.

People are pointing to the prices of Mechs - is this available anywhere? I understand that conceptually and literally a large brawler would be more expensive to acquire/maintain, but considering they are trying to balance the game into almost "class" roles, and have it F2P, is the cost going to vary THAT much?

Jenner or Cat maybe, Jenner is specialized for speed but that's good for harrassing, base capping, and scouting. No lack of options with the fast guys!

I don't have any computer issues, I have a pretty solid rig.

I'd LOVE to have all the mechs, but I've already weighed what I'm willing to spend upfront. Besides, we have to have a few lower-tiered founders to make you guys look better, right? :P

I would pick the hunchback.. and it plays better if you are a hunchback in real life..so if you are good in this mech.. we will all know you're a hunchback... !

really! :P

I'm gonna go with the hunchback, something middle of the road.

as strange as it sounds id suggest Atlas to use as a way to gauge what weapons you like. its got LRM's SRM's, an AC/20, and Medium Lasers. with it youd get a good feel for what range and class of weapons you would enjoy more.

Does anyone have any idea what how scouting might be handled in this game? I'm wondering if a lot of people might be overlooking taking a light mech. It would also depend on the maps though.

Personally I went with the Atlas just because it would probably cost the most to get one afterward. I am making a lot of assumptions in my purchase, such as hard point limitations on the other mechs, but I figure worst case scenario, this way I don't have to buy one assault mech.
