Hey guys, school is now over for the summer and between my job, other activities and much needed sleep I've decided to take another crack at Map Making on the CryEngine 3 sandbox kit.

a few months ago I first experienced "CE3SB" and loved it, with the ease of use and other tools I'm hoping to relearn it and create that map that has been in my head forever.

this also comes from a comment a while back claiming that Map making is "hard work" and takes "a lot of time" and "many people". and I want to prove them wrong.

DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a professional 3D artist, this is not even my hobby, this is just a thingy to prove people wrong.

for this experiment I will be working FROM SCRATCH... that mean a blank canvas and no help from other projects.

every so often I'll be posting pictures of my work on these forums to show you what I have in mind. and what I am planning to do in the future, along with how long it took me before finishing that segment.

on that note, here is my first picture

Oh man, I can't *wait* to see what you come up with!

30m high sand dunes, with palm trees and resort buildings would fit that map quite well.

Where is he going to get resort building assets? Or palm trees for that matter?

Let's say he makes a 4 km by 4 km map. How many palm trees would be in that? Will they be destructible? What minimum specs is he designing the map for?

There are a few clusters of palm trees within the "Crimson Strait" map. Several suitable buildings from various maps can be repurposed.

No, if he's going to talk about how easy it is to make a map, he needs to create all the assets that go with it as well.

This should be good. Also, nice PGI skull in the middle there, albeit a little derped.

ah, good question. Resort building assets will be done separately. Since I'm going to be using a resort motif I will most likely have to create most of the buildings from scratch but based on the measurements of existing MWO assets.

This means I will have to
-rip them from the directories convert the .cry to .obj,
-Fiddle around with them in 3DS Max 2014,
-Make new assets based on sizes of either other buildings or 'MECHS... or on a bigger scale (heh heh).
-Convert the new buildings from obj to .Cry
-and then port them into the sandbox

since I'm dealing with a 4096 x 4096 Kilometer map I will probably have to make quite a few Tree assets and use a bunch of them.

Palm trees will be almost half as tall as Atlai but since I'm still learning I will not be able to make them destructible.

the minimum specs that I am shooting for are actually going to be the normal specs for MWO, since I am trying to figure in factors such as 12 players each with 10,000+ poly mech models and effects to other models ranging from the 1000-2500 range maybe added in.

I actually want to remodel the map a bit and do some texturing from Square and White to Tan and Round and I'll probably time myself on that tomorrow

thank you for your questions, if you have any more feel free to ask.

Sorry, Work called me away and I was only able to do a bit of terrain reworking and a bit of low-res texturing

I'll start working on buildings soon
