Was playing today, Tanked pretty hard and suddenly remembered I was not in a stalker, but in my Griffin, "Peter", which is a medium with an XL 350!

At 14 percent I had to back off. Thanks to the Marik bois, who listened to some tactics and finished off the enemy team.

Nice. And at he same time, you've resolved something I had been pondering, which is why medium 'mech pilots handle their charges like assault 'mechs. Maybe they're just all forgetting that they are not in an assault 'mech. Hats off to you for surviving, when so many get crushed beneath my Victor in pointless, pointblank engagements.

When confronted with a medium I expect them to run away, or just take a couple shots and use their superior speed to escape or get into my rear arc, but only Cicada pilots manage that with any regularity, and I generally don't worry about them too much because one salvo is enough to convince them to shove off, assuming they survive that, and I have better things to worry about, like LRMs. Well that and his bigger friends.

But then you run into some of these guys, often quite literally, and they just stand there and trade shots with an assault 'mech, or worse, a brawler assault mech like mine. What's this, another Shadow Hawk rocking an LB-10X or a PPC? Both? A Griffin with LRMs? And of all the tactical options this pilot has, they have selected go to-to-toe with a Victor? I can dump half my ammo on Terra Therma before overheating, my CT has more armor than the entire torso of some light mechs, and I run a standard engine. There is no way that this encounter ends happily for the medium 'mech pilot. If they're good, they land every single CT shot and I have to be more cautious. If not or their ping is low, I destroy them in two or three salvos, hell sometimes just one. These pilots ignore previous damage like an Atlas.

Hunchbacks are easily my favorite, though, especially the ones with AC/20s, and the energy builds. Lots of firepower for a medium 'mech, still not more than a Victor. They have a nasty habit of shutting down right in front of me. The cockpit hitbox on an HBK is pretty small, but it is really easy to hit if they aren't moving. It would not surprise me at all if half my "Boom Headshot" kills were Hunchbacks. It would probably be higher, but sometimes I'm a little slow on the draw and they get the chance to hit the override. Then they immediately fire and kill themselves.

I've gone on quite long enough, but the point is that good medium 'mech pilots are in short supply, which is odd, since in canon they are supposed to be the most plentiful. Instead, heavies are the most plentiful, and amazingly, they use their 'mechs like mediums are supposed to be used. It is not uncommon at all for a heavy to take some punishing shots at me and scoot off somewhere else. Sometimes they disappear entirely, and others they appear behind me. Those matches don't go so well. I should have medium 'mech support, but if there is any, it usually isn't still alive, presumably killed by another assault jock or something else way beyond their capability to handle alone. Maybe it takes the mentality of a heavier class to know how to pilot lighter ones? Just a thought.

07 for a well-played match where you clearly helped your team out a lot.

That whole game looks like a victory for the mediums (and Marik, too? ).

Nice job there

Kudos to you! Yeah, the Griffins can torso twist and spread damage like a boss. I had a game like that once, except my 1N was a standard engine brawler. A heated firefight started a bit away from me in Canyon, and both teams were taking a beating. Unfortunately, the enemy got the upper hand and wound up with four mechs left in the area, versus our single Stalker missile boat. I made it there in time to try to help (after dealing with a more minor skirmish), but the Stalker quickly went down and left me against three gauss/dual LL Dragons, and a zombie Cent. I managed to take apart the zombie and two of the Dragons in a brawl before jumping out to hook up with our remaining lance. I was missing both arms, my left torso, and armor on everything but the head.
