I bought a bunch of paints to try on my airbrush. A few of these bottles.

These ones seem to have a lot more medium and less pigments. When you thin them you'll notice the difference compared to say vellejo paints which remain rich. But hey, like you said they're wayyy more affordable. I use these for covering larger surfaces.

Also, Ceramcoat smells a lot nicer than Americana sprayed out of an airbrush.

Ahhh! Yeah I am not so sure how good they would be for airbrushing as I strictly work hand brushing. I agree on them not being as pigmented or the pigment is not as fine as the acrylics geared more for the minis. It has not caused me an issue as I work with very thin layers anyway, so I am putting multiple layers of everything past the base coat. Though only thinning per say I have when working with these is I dip my brushes in water and blot just a tab of the water back out on a paper towel leaving a good amount in the brush when I pick up these paints with it, but yeah you have to thin even more with the airbrushes.

Also curious if anyone here has tried the testors model master acrylic, and the testors special FX washes? I picked up some of the washes a while back at hobby lobby. They have about 8-10 different colors of the washes. I like them I do notice that right out of the bottle they are not quite as thin as they should be so I usually use a wet brush with water already in it when I pick up the wash. Just curious if that is how they are normally (which might be the case as they are more model centric), or if maybe they were an old batch or something.

Also anyone thoughts on Acrylic inks? I know some people use them to make washes/glazes. I picked up a blue and sepia color but have not a chance to dabble with them yet.

I think the best part of painting stuff is just trying things.. if cost isn't that big of an issue get a bottle or two and try it out! I think pretty much all acrylics mix ok.

Mini's might be a bit different than larger models like below, but I used all sorts of random stuff. Vellajo polyethylene primer, Golden artist fluid acrylics, fluid transparent and metalics, ceramcoat varnishes, 10 year old CItidel paints, Vellejo model colours and krylon latex seal.. It all seems to mix and match fine...

Although I've recently started trying some enamels and laqures. They are a different beast.

Is that a regular Jenner Mini? The only Jenners I could find around are the ones styled after TT. If so please let me know where you found that one!!!

Yeah I use a combination of the ceramcoat varnishes, with some of the spray on kind like testors model master dulcoat. I love that stuff! Haven't tried the krylon yet. I have seen the liquid acrylics also,but have not had a chance to mess with them yet.

Damn that Jenner is sweet!

haven't been there in a while, but I used to enjoy the figures Mr. Fanjoy has been painting over the years. http://heavygauss.com/

Thanks! I made that one way back when. The TT designs look so goofy.

Really neat, never even heard of that stuff before. Also if you end up not wanting to mold your own or if you end up making your own games (I have a few I made and playtested, it is fun!) then you might want to hit up Litko for any custom counters, tokens or bases.

http://www.litko.net/

Here is a link to his battletech stuff.

And if you want to make your own interior scenery or buildings there is a guy that makes silicone molds that are reusable and you can fill them with dental plaster or plastic to use several times over.

He has some molds that end up making things like the old spacehulk and heroquest games I used to enjoy.

BTW, you guys suck! I had sold almost all my mini stuff once I had babies in the house. Now my babies are becoming old enough to be potential players and painters of their own and I've got the itch to get back into this!

I'll second vallejo. GW paints are decent enough but NOT cheap and they dry out far too quickly because the ever smaller bottles are crap and dont seal properly. The GW washes and inks are good.

Vallejo has dropper bottles ( yes you can open them if you wanted ) so they stay good longer + convenient dosing for mixing colors.

My tip : start a small note book with mix recipes and a small swatch of it next to the recipe.
Second tip : brushes can make alot of difference in your end result, treat em right and they'll treat you right.

@Barantor Thanks for the link!!!

I have made some custom dungeon pieces out of Styrofoam. The kids love them! If I eve get back into doing D&D or Osric I plan on making a module with the pieces made/to be made. Definitely will take advantage of some of the stuff on that site as well!

@dwwolf. Great tips!

I've got a few large models that I've decided to paint as well, they're pretty old so I don't mind painting over them. [Even though they still aren't that great of quality]

I've done a few layers just to gauge what I wanna do with them, but I will definately come back to them on a later date.
