  • Each configuration has its own 'Mech Tree, in the same manner as standard 'Mech variants.
(that's a quotation from the command chair post regarding the omnimech rules http://mwomercs.com/...nd-construction)

Just to make sure, if i swap a bodypart eg the leftarm from my already mastered Timberwolf with a better one (eg. better hardpoints) then i have to remaster the hole mech-tree?

To my understanding the mech tree will be tied to the CT.

You can swap the Prime's arms onto the B CT, and that counts toward mastering the B
You swap the B arms onto the Prime CT, that counts toward mastering the Prime.

IIRC, the combining of chassis legs and arms from one to the next of the same variant will be mainly done in the mechlab and has no affect on mech skills.

Mech skills are tied to the CT. If you don't play with that particular CT, you don't generate XP for it

My understanding is, that the configuration is based on the center torso as the only bodypart which you cant change. The Center Torso is what makes the Masakari B the Masakari B (f.E.). You can change all the other bodypars the way they fit, but you still have the same configuration with still just one Mechtree as long as you have the same CT (and it wont be possible to change it) inside.
They also say it: A Configuration is actually the same like a Chassis of the IS-Mechs, just a different name for it!
So you have just one Mechtree for each configuration (like Madcat prime, MadCat A, MadCat , as for each Cataphract-Variant (Cata 3D, 4X, IM...)
Changing the legs, LT/RT or Arms doesnt result in skilling up a new mechtree! (if it was that way, then omnimechs wont be, what they are supposed to! :)

this is really a strange system

the Nova for example has the same CT in all 3 vatiants (possibly just different quirks). meanign I can level them all 3 with the same config.
Could have made more sense to make a single Omnimech tree and give it simply 3x the required XP cost.
But that would have required more coding, maybe not worth the effort in PGI's eyes.

It doesn't really have the "same CT" it's built the same way and everything, but it's not the same CT. Same thing with the Cataphracts for example. The CT-4X and the CTF-IM both use the same CT. This is the exact same thing. No complication or anything like that.

Your Nova Prime is still gonna be the nova prime even if you slap different arms on it.

It is literally identical to how IS mechs work. There is no difference. When you put the Arms of a C config on the CT of an A config, you are not moving them from one mech to the next. It's more like buying a new weapon for your mech. The mech stays the same. Except unlike IS mechs, you can also purchase and sell body parts.

The system is no more different or complicated from what we have right now for IS mechs.

Its actually really the same!
You will have one mechtree for each configuration. Maybe they just named it different to let it fit better to the omnimech-style... dunno...
The only (and big) difference is: You can switch arms and lt/rt with different weapon slots which means that you can more or less decide by your own, which hardpoints your mech will have, by switching the different arms and left and right torsi with different weaponslots between the Configurations... (and maybe there are a few bonus "omnipods" to purchase for a greater variability??)
it all depends on the existing "omnipods" and there weaponslots (if you have a left and right arm with f.E. 2 Ballistic Slots each for the Dire Wolf, then you can make any of your Dire Wolf Configurations with 4 Ballistic Points! - i actually hope there is no possible way of giving a direwolf 4 ballistic slots, cause that mothaf***** will kill everything!)
